It was a battle of 2 AFC East teams having very little luck go their way this season with the Buffalo Bills taking on the New York Jets today from the Meadowlands. A mainly defensive battle was broken open ith a late touchdown as the Bills won 13-3, sending the Jets to a season ending 1-7.
It started early as the game was opened by a Buffalo Bills drive that took over 10 minutes, although it only ended in a 30 yard field goal by Rian Lindell making it 3-0 Buffalo, which is how the first quarter ended. The ensuing drive by the Jets ended with a 28 yard field goal by Mike Nugent with 10:28 left in the first half, tying the game at 3.
The Jets had an opportunity a couple of minutes later, when Darrelle Revis picked off a Trent Edwards pass, with 7:58 left in the half, earning his first career interception. The Jets couldn't move the ball at all, however, and the game remained tied at 3. The defense held, and the Jets had another drive end with a Leon Washington fumble. The half was run out and the game was tied 3-3 going into the locker room.
The second half began with a lot more of the same from the first half. Both teams had a little movement between the 20s, but no one made a serious scoring threat. The Bills made a quarterback change after the first 2 drives in the second half, but JP Losman didn't effect very much change, with the 3rd quarter ending 3-3.
A scary moment happened in the middle of the third quarter, when Laveranues Coles made his only reception of the afternoon. He was hit by Terrence McGee, both went down and didn't move very much for several minutes, a little bit reminiscent of the final hit that Wayne Chrebet took as a player. Both were able to leave the field and play continued.
The scoring drought finally ended in the 4th quarter, with Rian Lindell connecting from 40 yards out, putting the Bills up 6-3 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Jets still didn't do much on offense, but Ben Graham did put a punt down that pinned the Bills back on their own 4 yard line. They appeared to be content to open some breathing room up for their punter, but JP Losman sent a pass deep down the right sideline to Lee Evans, with Darrelle Revis and Abram Elam converging to intercept. The two defenders collided, preventing either one from intercepting, then Evans came down with the ball and an easy 85 yard touchdown to put the Bills up 13-3.
The Jets did get the ball back with just under 3 minutes to go, and the wish of many Jets fans was finally answered as Chad Pennington was pulled for Kellen Clemens. Whether this is the end of the Pennington era or not I am sure we will find out this week. Clemens did make a couple of quick completions to Chris Baker and Justin McCareins. An interception by Terrence McGee put an end to the Jets comeback hopes. A second interception thrown in the endzone by Clemens was academic, final score 13-3, as the Jets fall to 1-7, and start to look ahead to next year.
