Bud Selig Is Ruining MLB, At least in FLA

Hi Fans,

So the Florida Marlins trade away two potential future Hall of Famers for a gaggle of young prospects. That's Florida Marlins speak for cheap baseball players who they hope will keep their team payroll below $20 million dollars, which is likely to be the annual salary for each of the two players, in a few years, the Detroit Tigers gladly took off the Marlins' hands. How the H--- does Bud Selig let this happen, especially when the Marlins receive about a $20 million dollar annual "subsidy" from the rich MLB teams, which is supposed to be allocated to player payroll, not the owner's already deep pockets.

Maybe Bud Selig, once he finally finds a barber that knows how to give him a decent haircut, should not let this trade go through. That would be in the best interest of MLB.

To let the Marlins get away with this trade Selig is doing a diservice to both MLB and Marlins fans alike.

Have a great Holiday. If you're a Tigers' fan I'm sure you will. If you're the one or two Marlins' fans, I feel your pain.

All the best,

Chuck T

If you knew anything about baseball then you would know its the Tigers who got screwed, not the Marlins. Thanks for stopping by, though.

NO, the Tigers won. In a few years if those prospects turn out, they will be traded away in the same fashion. So if the Tigers want them back they can have them, without putting another dime into their development. Small market teams in the majors are simply AAAA minor league teams.

I don't know if I'd go as far to say that the Tigers got screwed - they did make themselves a better team for the next two years, and Maybin has less value to them because they already have a CF. But they certainly gave up plenty of talent for what they got. By 2010, the Marlins will have a lineup featuring Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, Maybin, and a few other hitters, and their rotation will feature Miller, Scott Olsen, Anibal Sanchez, and whoever else comes out of the group containing the other prospects they got and the other guys they had. The Fish weren't going to contend this year with or without Cabrera - why keep him if he's essentially going to waste? Saying that small market teams are AAAA teams is a ridiculous statement to make, coming off a postseason where three of the four teams in the AL/NLCS were in the bottom quarter of payroll in the league.

Show me a small market team that keeps its core together like Boston and New York. Once a player on a small market team becomes a superstar, he is gone. The Pirates and Marlins don't trade away there best players to get prospects, they trade them cause they know they will lose those players to free agency so they might as well get something for them. It's not rebuilding, it's making the best of a bad situation.

I want to see what the basis for declaring Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera as future Hall of Famers is.

If you take out Willis's 2005, (22-10), his career mark is 46-44. He was 10-15 with an ERA over 5 last season. Cabrera can hit, but his zone rating is atrocious, and he will soon eat himself out of being a hot corner man. I don't see either being HOFers.

You talk about this deal being one Selig should step in on...were you doing the same when the Expos dealt off Vlad Guerrero et al in the late 90s?

Face it: Jeffrey Loria is the Dr. Kevorkian of MLB franchises. And Selig wanted the Expos euthanized by Loria. Hell, he gave millions from MLB just so Loria could purchase the Marlins afterwards.

It's not Bud Seliq's fault that the Players' Union will never allow a salary cap or floor.

the salery floor would do more for baseball and would be easier to install in the cap.

A floor would do wonders. The Marlins are going to get around $30 million in revenue sharing yet their overall payroll by estimates will be about $8 so Loria is pocketing the other money. A number of small market teams do that as well. Teams should be required to have a payroll at least within 10% or so of the amount of revenue sharing.

Give the MArlin's owner credit for a smart business model, Keeping his payroll at or near the subsidy that he gets form the luxury tax then he can put all the rest of the teams's earnings into his pocket. Let the Yankees and Red Sox pay his team's salary. Not saying I like it, but it works for his bottom line.

Which accomplishes what exactly? Fielding a AAA caliber team in the majors before an attendance that doesn't even reach the thousands?

That is travesty and a stupid way to conduct business.

Having said that, Dolan probably pays Loria a stipend for all that brilliant management decision making.
