Bud Selig Is A Coward

by user Brendan.Canney

In another effort by Bud Selig to appear as a strong MLB Commissioner he has made an ultimatum to New York Yankees' slugger Jason Giambi. Either he cooperates with Senator George Mitchell's bogus, costly, and ultimately useless investigation into steroids or face a suspension. According to current MLB rules testing positive for steroids or other performance enhancing drugs warrants a 50-game suspension. There is a problem however in Giambi's case. Jason Giambi has never tested positive for steroids or performance enhancing drugs since the plan was implemented. When the New York Daily News asked an attorney to give his opinion on the legitimacy of the suspension he said, "It's just a dead argument, legally." So if this is a dead argument legally what kind of repercussions does the MLB front office face if Giambi decides not to talk and take the disciplinary action? You would expect Giambi to appeal whatever action is taken against him and more than likely win.

These threats made by Bud Selig not only make him look like a bully but a bully who can't back it up. If he keeps making these seemingly idle threats he will continue to only weaken his authority. So lets say hypothetically that Giambi decides not to cooperate with the investigation when the Tuesday deadline Selig made comes.  Selig in essence would be starting a war with arguably the strongest players union in professional sports, the MLB Players Association.  Not only would Selig and Senator Mitchell not have accomplished squat in their investigation, but they may end up severely pissing off Don Fehr and MLB players.  Also, according to sources in the MLB front office the Mitchell investigation wouldn't be asking Giambi to name names, only to corroborate what was leaked from the BALCO investigation.  Where was this crackdown on steroids in the 90's when the problem was growing as fast as Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire?  Fans and journalists want names of players who have cheated the game and cheated their clean counterparts.

Giambi admitted taking steriods, so no positive test is required to prove guilt. Baseball can legally suspend him under the policy because of his admission, which is in effect, strike one.

Actually baseball didn't have a policy to suspend players for steroid usage until 2005. The San Francisco Chronicle reported in December 2004 that Giambi had told a federal grand jury investigating Balco, a steroid distribution ring, that he had used steroids and human growth hormone before signing with the Yankees in December 2001 and while with them in 2002 and 2003.

The agreement has no date. If somebody admitted taking steriods in 1985, then the investigation goes back to that date, and would cover everyone. Its not exclusive of any timeframe.

If that's the case then why wasn't Canseco investigated or any one of the players he mentioned in book questioned?

Or how about Rafael Palmeiro?

Because they're retired. They can be questioned, as they were in Congress. And I believe George Mitchell has talked to Canseco.

Yeah, and we saw how much Congress got out of them. Mark McGwire pulled a Rosenhaus and Rafael Palmeiro lied under oath. Oh, and Sammy Sosa conveniently forgot how to speak English.

Well, Brendan, that's really neither here nor there, is it? The fact is, nobody wants Congress involved much at all, the only way that this whole thing is going to be solved satisfactorily is if baseball does it for the most part internally.

Just an FYI, there can only be one under a particular title, so try and stay way from a generic title like this that dozens (hundreds?) of people may try to use.

Bud Selig is once more showing that he is a complete idiot trying to fight the player's union. He looked the other way while the owners were lining their pockets with millions of dollars in increased ticket sales because of McGwire and Sosa in 1998 but now is trying to act like he really cares about whether players use steroids. He is just trying to keep Congress off his back so is indulging in this charade called the Mitchell investigation that is powerless to do anything unless Congress intervenes. I have more respect for Giambi than any other player accused of using steroids. At least he didn't lie to a grand jury or stonewall in front of a congressional committee like McGwire. And then like Brendan wrote Sosa pulled his no comprehende act.
