Bucks Trade Ford to Raptors for Villanueva

9
Vote

The Milwaukee Bucks have traded point guard T.J. Ford, who made a successful return in 2005 from a spinal cord injury, to the Toronto Raptors for forward Charlie Villanueva.

Villanueva was acquired by Toronto with the seventh pick in the 2005 Draft, just six picks after the man he will now accompany in the Bucks frontcourt, Andrew Bogut.

I don't like this trade, who the hell is going to play point now? Mo Williams, he isn't half as good as Ford, being a Bucks fan this worries me, hopefully Villanueva and Bogut will compliment each other well

Yeah, that was an awfully good pick up for the Raptors. And I'm sure gonna enjoy seeing Ford and P.J. Tucker on the court together.

Very interesting... Colangelo's got his dish and drive PG now... wonder if he'll be able to get something for Mike James in a sign-and-trade.

Again, with the ambiguous minuses. What - a disgruntled Raptors fans annoyed by someone who thinks Ford isn't as good as Villanueva?

One was me, to the "Mo Williams, he isn't half as good as Ford" comment.

Mo Williams is actually a better player than Ford -- a better shooter, a better scorer, less turnover-prone, etc. Give Ford the edge in passing and defense, but only slightly, and not enough to offset the rest of Williams' offense. And I wouldn't thrilled with my PG-of-the-future having fused verebrae, either. Those things said, I think this trade works for everybody. (The surprisingly effective) Charlie V. makes Magliore easily expendable (those teams going after him do realize he's not that good, right?), and Colangelo might be able to harness Ford's passing and speed, Nash-style. Whither Mike James, though? Back to Houston?

I think time will only tell which player will be better. Their numbers from last season are very similar. Yes, TJ Ford had a worse turnover rate, but I think it evens out - he averaged about two more turnovers per game than Williams, but he also averaged about 2 more assists. My main thing with this trade was that I thought it was awfully quick for the Bucks to deal a guy they spent such a high draft pick on. I also think that TJ Ford will get better with time. This season, he was still getting his legs under him. Williams has not had that kind of injury, and has a year's more experience in the NBA. I like Ford's cieling a lot more than I like Williams'.

I was actually thinking the same thing, Davis. Williams far exceeds Ford in shooting, and ball control. He may not have the speed, but that just may be Ford's downfall, he's too quick for his skill level. ASwaff, Ford was taken with 8th pick in the 2003 draft. Shouldn't you be saying the "awfully quick" comment about the Raptors with Villanueva (taken 7th last year)?

I would be saying that, if I felt the Raptors were headed in a winning direction. But I don't feel that way. Between Ford, Williams, Redd and Bogut, I really felt like the Bucks were building a winning team. That's why I felt their move was a bit more premature than the Raptors'.

Good point, although I think they had a little more flexibility in the point guard position than they did in the front court. Magloire needs to go, and bringing in Villanueva opens that door. Magloire could now potentially be dealt for Williams' backup, although Charlie Bell showed flashes of being an adequate backup, nothing along the lines of say, a Devin Harris in Dallas, but adequate.

I never understood why Toronto drafted Villanueva. They already had Chris Bosh who plays the exact same position and then the next two years they went and took Graham and Bargnani who will also be power forwards. Fortunately, Colangelo is cleaning up the mess now and starting to fill some other needs.
