Bucks Not the Boss of Yi

20

by Allonthefield

The Milwaukee Bucks' worst nightmare has come true: it appears that their first draft pick, Yi Jianlian, will not sign with the team.

The Chinese national team is throwing its weight around, sort of like the mom who tells her kids they can use her as an excuse. Yi doesn't want to play in Milwaukee, and they are lending legitimacy to his cause.

I'd hardly classify myself as an expert on matters of the NBA draft, particularly as they relate to drafting players from overseas, but a couple of things about this story stick out liking blaring sirens and flashing lights.

First of all, Yi let it be known before the draft that he wanted to play in a city with a heavy Asian influence. Sorry, but Milwaukee hardly qualifies.

Call me crazy, but it would seem that the Bucks would want to hammer out a few details, such as Yi's willingness to sign with the team, before burning a #6 pick. I know there's a bit of a language barrier to deal with, but when it comes to a lottery pick, you've got to communicate with sign language, if that's what it takes.

Second, this story solidifies the uncomfortable notion that the United States may be losing its stronghold as center of the basketball universe. Ten, fifteen years ago, a player like Yi would have killed to play anywhere in the U.S., just to get the opportunity to make a name for himself.

These days, though, Yi holds the upper hand and appears content to wait this thing out. Who knows, maybe he'll reappear in next year's draft.

Milwaukee brass have to be banging their collective heads against the wall at this point. Unfortunately, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Well, the fact is that Yi is also passing on millions of dollars.

What upper hand? It is Yi sitting at home without a NBA contract. The Bucks will move on. This kid is not above the NBA regardless of his nationality.

It'll be interesting to see if any teams will even give him a shot after this tantrum.

Agreed. Why would any NBA owner want the hassle of having to deal with the Chinese delegation pulling the puppet strings on this kid?

It's too bad this won't happen but when players pull this shit the entire league should stick together and NO TEAM should draft him- serve him right!

Exactly. His best interest would've been to play it out and try to convince the Bucks to trade him. Now that he has refused to play, any team willing to give him a contract now will be in my shithouse for the rest of time.

I firmly believe that this kid should play for the Bucks but have to admit that it would be a bit of a guilty pleasure to witness Mark Cuban vs Chinese Government should Yi become a Maverick.

He should be banned from the NBA for at least 3 years. But not just him, any player who decides not to sign with the team that drafted them.

So did you believe that John elway and the potential Eli Manning should have also been threatened with these bans?

I'm sure the Chargers are losing a hell of a lot of sleep over Eli's refusal.

My understanding is that if he chooses not to play for the Bucks this year, he can't play anywhere. If he goes back to China to play for them, the Bucks retain his rights and he cannot re-enter the draft next year. The only way to be eligible for the draft next season is for Yi to sit completely for a year.

On a related note, have any of you seen the Youtube footage of Yi playing summer ball and just gettin' schooled?

Why did they draft a guy with one move. . . against a chair?

While I cant put too much weight into his summer league performance he was foul prone and did not move well without the ball like most rookies. His ability to put the ball on the floor was impressive though. Milwaukee is precisely the type of samller market team that will always have trouble signing guys and will be forced to trade his rights for a veteran and unfortunately get 75 cents or less on the dollar for him.

This is nothing new except that it is a foreign player. Ferry, Francis, Kiki, it's happened before and veterans "force" trades all the time which isn't really any different. I think the Bucks should be compensated though. They took who they believed was the best player available and what? They don't get him because of their geography? That's a recipe for disaster like the Yanks/Sox MLB where only a few teams matter. Give the Bucks an extra pick next year or something and let Yi sit out a year. Personally, I think if the Bucks hold tough, they will get their guy. China isn't going to have its best perimeter player not play pro ball the year before they host the olympics. Ain't happening.

I think the best option is for the Bucks to hold firm and let Yi's side crack; who needs who more? The Bucks could use this time to gel as a team, finding a team that WANTS to win together. If Yi comes to the team, hello alienation, not from being away from the Chinese, but from the team; some rook thinks he's ALL that?

I'm with the Bucks on this one. I'd sit on that dude's rights until somebody offers me Kobe or Garrnet for his rights....he's the one missing a year of NBA training leading up to the '08 Olympics and while their market is small, the Knicks and other teams are dumping cash on 'em and they'll pay the slotted rate....Yi's people and the Chinese government aren't looking at the long term here....

Agreed. And who says the NBA really needs to put up with the damn Chinese Government attempting to govern where their imports play?

Why be in the draft then? you get what you get if you go early because you are good but you will have to go to a crappy team thats just the way the NBA draft works
