Bruce Arena hired by Red Bulls

10
Vote

Former U.S. National coach Bruce Arena has a new job, and a challenge at that. He has been hired by the New York Red Bulls. Arena has been brought back to the MLS, having won 2 MLS Cups and a CONCACAF Champions Cup with D.C. United and 5 NCAA champions with the University of Virginia. Bruce Arena takes over for Richie Williams, who was the interim coach after the Red Bulls fired Mo Johnston.

The task ahead of him is certainly a tough one. The Red Bulls have been terrible this season, last place in the Eastern Conference and second to last in the league with 17 points. They've done so recording the fewest wins in MLS, winning only 3 of their 17 games. If anyone can turn it around, it may just be America's most decorated coach.

Wow, MLS is in season now!? Isn't it the middle of summer?

It's the logical time, since a lot of teams play in football stadiums and they are not free in the winter due to the NFL or college football. Plus we get an all-star game against Chelsea coming up.

I think Chelsea will win that. Summer-time football is very illogical. It is a winter sport in EVERY other country in the world (bar maybe Canada). In the same way that summer-time NFL is bad, so is summer football. That's why the World Cup wasn't very good, it was too hot for the players to play their best.

Not true Alex. Northern Europe also plays summer season, since it's really too cold there to play in December. Of course Chelsea will win, it's an all-star team too. And I better one at that.

Because he can spend on players, which an international team cannot do. Hence the beauty of international sport.

can't PAY for players, but we could just take a few artillery divisions through Africa or South America and start 'annexing' some talent... isn't that why the French and Germans were so good? Territorial talent?

There's a salary cap though, so he can't spend too much. There's always been rumors of a rule allowing teams to have a cap-free player to lure a superstar over, most likely Beckham or Ronaldo.

Or another veteran that is shortly going to be too bad for European Premier Leagues.

Thats been a big rumor that I heard a lot when I was in Germany about a big time Euro player making the switch to the USA. If there was a team to do it, it would be NYC or DC.

They were talking about Zidane- he'd put a few people in the seats, eh- and Ronaldo. Beckham has said, a few yrs back, that he would like to come and play in America.

The Red Bulls have already inquired about Ronaldo... SO far that seems like it won't happen. The Beckham possibility makes alot of sense though. Especially in NYC. A guy liek him could add alot of relevance to the MLS. Both in the US and the world.

Beckham in the MLS sounds about right, he would love the spotlight of NY

Beckham said he wouldn't mind ending his career in the US. I wonder how much of a decision that was, or whether it would be influenced by his wife's desire to go to NY.

He'd love the spotlight in NY... if anyone actually followed the MLS. I suppose maybe the cities that have MLS teams care about it, but other than that most people couldn't care less about the MLS.

The Red Bulls are absolutely terrible. Arena was a smart hire. I'm glad he's not the US team coach anymore, but he's a good hire for the Red Bulls.

I think that Beckham and the misses have the same agenda when it comes to living in the spotlight. So NY or maybe the LA Galaxy (i think they are called) are places where both their egos can be maintained.

Maybe this is a dumb question... but is the team name "Red Bull New York," or the "New York Red Bulls." I always thought it was "Red Bull New York."

Officially, it's Red Bull New York, but practically they've been called the Red Bulls. I use Red Bulls since it's not as dumb.
