I'd love to see Klinsmann take over. We need some fresh ideas and faces. Hopefully it's not some MLS guy who gets the job.

Was he really the root of the problem, though, or did he want to step down as gracefully as he could at this point?

I think after 8 years, it was probably time for some fresh ideas. It's not like they were winning all the time.

Coach gets to much credit when they win, too much heat when they lose. Arena was not the problem. I think several players underperformed like Donovan, Beasley and McBride to name a few and it really hurt the US. Plus, they played in a group that had the eventual champs, a good team in Czech Republic and the champions of Africa. It was a culmination of several factors and even Juregen Klinsmann would have had a difficult time getting through that group.

I disagree that they underperformed, I think they all performed as well as they could - the problem was that they are just not good enough. Your point about the tough group is more accurate.

True. I guess I meant they underperformed for what was necessary to advance. Tommy Smyth was quoted on ESPN as saying something like, "Can you make chicken soup when all you have is chicken feet?" when describing USA's team. I thought it was pretty funny and somewhat true.

hmm..well what ever happened to Kobe Jones (I believe that was his name...) the guy with the crazy hair? Was he left off of this year's squad, or did he retire...?

I am sarcasticly SHOCKED!!! Bruce "the Anti-Wayne Gretzky's Dad" Arena is gone?? sob sob... Me thinks he got off lucky, if this was South America, he wouldn't need to resign...

Bruce should be proud of his tenure. At the very least the U.S. has become the continental powerhouse.

To be fair, I would give Mexico the nod over USA in terms of North & Central America. Other than that, there is not much of a continent to dominate... It's like saying to the Royals coach if he was fired, well it's okay, we beat all the other Kansas City teams, we just couldn't quite repeat it against everybody else. Not much of a prize.

I have to disagree Alex. If you take out Azteca, the U.S. has handled Mexico mightily: WC 2002, Gold Cup, qualifying, etc.

USA and Mexico are equals. USA has owned them lately...at least away from Azteca. If the US and Mexico switched groups, the US would have advanced and Mexico wouldn't have.

Jones was left at home, his age is catching up to him. I believe Arena was part of the problem. The US team often played with little enthusiasm and seem to have a lack of energy. Then you looked at the sidlines and you saw Bruce sitting down or standing with his hands folded over his head. Rarely moving to excitment. How can a player be motivated when the Coach shows a lack of interest. Ive been an Arena fan since his days with the Hoos, but I will be the first to say that Juregen Klinsmann would be a welcome and needed change.

Also a problem: The refs have way too much sway in Soccer games. If not for the two bull shit red cards against the US in the Italy match, there is a great chance US would have won that game. And the spin on Arena would be that he is a genious for beating the World Champs, not a goat.

Arena was the most tenured National Team coach, I think he did great in 2002 but over-coached in qualifiers and in World Cup. US team strength is an open, fast paced attacking style. It would be great to see Klinsmann have a shot given that's the style he employed w/ Germany. I would also like to see Arena get a chance at coaching in Europe, I think he deserves a shot.

Klinsmann inspired the German team and country. He used techniques that were so potent even German politicans were calling him to see how he was so effective. The U.S should definitely go after him.

Klinsman would be an absolute coup should the US get him. I realize it's a possiblility as he lives in california, but he's arguably the most sought after coach in the world after the World Cup. There will be much competition.
