Broncos trade 22nd pick to 49ers

Vote

ESPN.com has reported that the Broncos have traded the 22nd pick in the NFL Draft to the 49ers for the 37th and 68th pick in the draft. This gives San Francisco 2 picks in the opening round and gives the Broncos 7 picks in the first 4 rounds of the draft.

The 49ers moving into this spot could indicate that they are after RB Lawrence Maroney, OLB Chad Greenway, OLB Bobby Carpenter, or DB (and possibly WR) Antonio Cromartie.

For the Broncos the move could mean they are satisfied with the RBs in their backfield and won't go after a RB until day 2 of the draft.

FOXSPORTS.COM - In initial negotiations the Broncos were trying to get the #6 pick in the draft, where they were targeting TE Vernon Davis. The 49ers did not trade the pick, which eventually led to this agreement.

This may clarify the intent of the Broncos with this trade. With the depth of TE in this draft several solid receiving TEs should be available in round 2 (Marcedes Lewis, UCLA or Leonard Pope, UGA if they use their first 2nd round pick or Dominique Byrd, USC or Anthony Fasano, ND if they use their second 2nd round selection). If the Broncos don't take DeAngelo Williams there's a strong possibility they go TE, RB in the second round. The Broncos may also be after RB LenDale White, whose stock has fallen to the point where he could be available with the 2nd round pick acquired from the 49ers.

From the 49ers standpoint, they made a huge mistake if Denver offered both 1st round selections for that 6th pick. It isn't known whether that happened or not.

If I were the Niners, I'd go after Carpenter. The only thing on that team that's worse than the offense is the defense, and Carpenter is an amazing LB. Moroney is good, and would be an upgrade over Gore, but Gore is adequate and they don't need a RB upgrade that badly.

I am surprised the Broncos made this move today instead of waiting until draft day. Good players sometimes fall in a draft and the Broncos were in the best position to move up and grab a guy or even have someone fall in their lap at 22. I am also surprised that in a draft that is considered so deep, the 49ers, with so many holes, would think it better to get one player rather than 2. Its the opposite of what most rebuilding teams do.

That's what got me too. The 49ers should be gaining picks, not trading them. They must be really high on someone they feel will still be available here.

But if they were really high on someone who might be there, why not wait until draft day to make this move.

??? This is an outside shot but perhaps they're looking to trade up and needed two first round picks to do it.

I was thinking that too. I would assume the prime targets would be Texas, but I doubt they would want to drop down to 6, and more likely the Saints. However, having shlled out #1 overall money last year for Smith, and having so many holes, why would San Fran trade up and again convert 2 players into 1. Does not make sense to me.

There's only one thing I can think of for this scenario and its to get Bush to get people in San Fran to go to the games. Only problem is its a bad trade for HOU to drop to six unless OT Ferguson is still on the board.

The 49ers still have 10 picks in the 2006 draft. This move was a great one because they can absolutely get two starters for next season. Don't disregard the fact that the 49ers could still trade down from #6 and pick up another pick on the first day. It's very likely that with so many studs available in the top 10 that some team would be willing to move up to get a Ferguson, Hawk, Davis or Huff.
