The British Columbia Lions capitalized on the Saskatchewan Roughriders' mistakes to win the battle of the two unbeaten West teams 42-12 Friday.
Riders penalties, fumbles and interceptions were abundant and as a result, the home team was no threat to win the game for most of the evening.
The Riders briefly brought the subdued crowd of 26,981 back into the game in the second with a Matt Dominguez touchdown, but they couldn't recover and allowed two touchdowns in the last minute of the game.
Joe Smith found the end zone twice for the Lions (3-0-0), while Jason Clermont had seven receptions for 68 yards.
Smith scored the first touchdown for B.C., after a Barron Miles interception and a Saskatchewan (2-1-0) offside brought B.C. down the field.
Lions backup quarterback Buck Pierce came into the game for two quarters until he bruised a bone, bringing Jarius Jackson into the game in the third.
Pierce completed six of 11 attempts for 80 yards, while Jackson, who played the final quarter, was 3-for-7 for 21 yards. Dave Dickenson started the game by going 5-for-6 for 37 yards.
B.C.'s Paul McCallum kicked two field goals in the second, one after a Rider fumble.
Another fumble, this one by Jason Armstead on a punt return, led to a B.C. touchdown drive. Pierce ran the ball nine yards to the end zone to bring the score to 21-0 for B.C. at halftime.
Marcus Crandell came in after the half for a struggling Joseph, who completed only four of 14 attempts for a total of 35 yards.
Crandell fared only a bit better, throwing two interceptions.
Crandell's second pass of the quarter was intercepted by Ryan Phillips, who ran the ball for 37 yards. Smith finished off the drive with his second run to the end zone.
The Riders showed some life in the third quarter with a field goal and a Crandell touchdown pass to Dominguez.
But the Lions finished with two touchdowns in the final minute of play. Jackson ran a yard for one touchdown, while Javier Glatt returned an interception to the end zone.
