The British Columbia Lions remained the only unbeaten team in the CFL with a 32-27 win over the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday.
B.C. quarterback Jarious Jackson, who replaced Buck Pierce to start the second half, threw touchdown passes to Geroy Simon and Cory Rodgers while Joe Smith ran in a 38-yard score. Paul McCallum kicked two field goals.
Calgary counterpart Henry Burris linked up with Rob Cote and Jeremaine Copeland for touchdowns. Sandro DeAngelis made two field goals, but he was wide on another attempt and had a kick blocked.
The Lions (5-0) host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-2) on Thursday, while the Stampeders (2-3) are in Edmonton on Saturday to face the Eskimos (2-2-1).
The Roughriders thrashed the host Esks 54-14 earlier Saturday afternoon.
The Stampeders lost at home for the first time this season in front of 28,564 at a sunny McMahon Stadium. The temperature was 30 degrees C at the 7 p.m. ET kickoff.
Jackson was 3-for-7 in passing for two touchdowns and he was intercepted once in relief of Pierce, who was 7-for-14 and was intercepted once in the first half.
Burris completed half of 44 pass attempts for 423 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted four times.
Down 25-11 heading into the fourth quarter, the Stampeders chased the Lions with Burris's 36-yard touchdown pass to Copeland at 8:56, DeAngelis's convert and his earlier 26-yard field goal to pull within four points.
But a Burris interception stalled Calgary's momentum as Lavar Glover picked him off and returned the ball 30 yards, which set up Jackson's 15-yard touchdown pass to Rodgers at 11:48 and put the Lions up 32-21.
Burris replied on a two-yard run with 1:19 remaining, after finding receiver Brett Ralph within five yards of the end zone, to keep Calgary's hopes of a win alive. The attempted two-point convert was unsuccessful.
Burris and Copeland connected on a 45-yard pass to get to the B.C. 18 early in the fourth quarter, but the Calgary quarterback's passes to Ken-Yon Rambo and Marc Boerigter in the end zone were knocked away and the Stamps settled for a field goal.
Smith's 38-yard scoring run put B.C. up 24-11 at 10:05 of the third quarter. The touchdown was helped by a pass interference penalty to Crance Clemons that gave B.C. a first down.
Burris threw a 33-yard bomb to Nik Lewis from the 41-yard line midway through the third quarter to set the Stamps up to score and possibly tie game, but he undid that good work getting intercepted by Korey Banks in the end zone.
DeAngelis's 47-yard field goal attempt to start the second half was blocked by Cameron Wake and recovered by Dennis Mitchell. Jackson marshalled the Lions 41 yards and capped it with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Simon at 4:32.
The game was tied 11-11 at the half. DeAngelis was wide on an attempted 46-yard field goal with 10 seconds left before halftime.
Calgary recovered from a dismal first quarter in which the Stampeders didn't get a first down and managed just 21 yards of offence, while the Lions took an 8-0 lead on a two-point safety and a 37-yard field goal McCallum.
But Burris rushed for three first downs in the second quarter and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to local product Cote at 12:38.
DeAngelis followed his convert with a 76-yard kickoff fumbled by B.C.'s Ian Smart, who conceded the one-point safety to deadlock the game.
DeAngelis and McCallum traded 29-yard field goals earlier in the second quarter.
The B.C. defense was dominant to open the game and never allowed Calgary decent field position. Burris was continually harried by the Lions' line and was sacked in the opening minutes.
The Lions' defense propped up a struggling offence as Pierce, in for a concussed Dave Dickenson, played with sore ribs. Third-stringer Jackson was inserted intermittently to give Pierce the occasional breather in the first half before taking over in the second.
