[edit] Biography
Brian Spencer was an original member of the New York Islanders.
Although a popular player with fans his personal life was troubled. His father, Roy Spencer, died Decemeber 12, 1970, after getting into a shootout with police at a television station in Prince George, British Columbia. Roy Spencer had threatened station employees when he could not see his son on television because the station was showing a Vancouver game instead.
After retirement Spencer eventually moved to Florida and struggled with addiction. His struggles were detailed in the book Gross Misconduct: The Life of Spinner Spencer. Spencer's life was cut short on June 3, 1988 when he was shot to death in a roadside holdup in South Florida. Eventually a Canadian television documentary would be made about his life entitled Gross Misconduct.
