Breaking News: The US Soccer team ain't that great

My points

  1. CONCACAF. So we are very good in CONCACAF competition, but that's not saying much. Never has a CONCACAF team made a World Cup Final, very rarely do any of them make it past the quarterfinals for the teams that qualify, so that's not saying a lot when the US owns Canada, Guatemala, and Jamaica. That is not the same point as saying that Italy owns France, England, and Sweden.
  2. World Cup 2002. I hate to say this, but it was a fluke run. We only beat 2 teams in the competition in Portugal and Mexico. We beat Mexico all the time, but Portugal has a history of underachieving. So that's nothing. Competitive? Yes. Fluke? Yes.
  3. FIFA Rankings. How the bloody heck did they figure that the US was better than Argentina before the World Cup!!! They are now ranked 16th I believe, when they should be in 40th. We always pride ourselves at being the best at something. Well, we as Americans need to face the fact that we aren't good at everything.
  4. Landon Donovan. So he scored 34 goals. Big deal! He can't perform at a world stage, when it matters the most.  The last 4 goals in international matches, have been penalties. Penalty kicks can be converted by a 9 year old. It's a matter of luck. Stop labeling him as one of the best US soccer players ever.

One way to improve is face tougher opponents, don't get cocky when you've never won a FIFA world tourney at any level, stop depending on one star. But most importantly, be humble.

I know Ibearg is going to get ticked off when he reads this, but it's mostly true. The US isn't that great a soccer team.

You're right. The FIFA Rankings are never going to reflect reality for two reasons:
  • Most competitive competitions are closed (i.e. only countries from one continent play each other)
  • Friendlies are included (often a team will pick an "experimental" team to try out new things)
  • Who cares about them? You don't get anything for being Number 1.

I think the US should be around the top 32 though.

I think you are exactly right about the quality of competition that the US faces. The US produce some very good individual players--Brian McBride, Demarcus Beasley, Claudio Reina, Guiseppe Rossi (I know he is on the Italian squad, but he was born in in NJ) and the goalkeepers Keller and Friedel to name a few. The thing that all these top players have in common is that they play in Europe for a good wage. I know I have said this before, but until the MLS pays a good wage the top athletes in the US will stick to American Football, Baseball and Basketball IMO and the US squad will languish in mediocrity.

I think you're wrong about Landon Donovan being one of the best American soccer players ever. I think he is one of the best American soccer players ever. That's the problem.

The US can improve. If Senegal can reach a World Cup Semi Final, there's no reason why a country like the United States can't.
