Breaking News: Rocket to Yankees

by user Tylersalt

During the game against the Seattle Mariners today, Roger Clemens announced on the stadium message board that he would be returning to the New York Yankees this season.  Financial terms are not yet available for the reported offer, and there is no word yet as to when Clemens will be in game shape, but the money must have been ridiculous for him to have made a decision this early on.

Most speculation thus far has been that out of three teams considered to be in the running for Roger's services, the Boston Red Sox would have the best chance of landing him, considering that so far they have been far and away better than the Yankees or the Houston Astros.  He must feel that he can give the Yankees the most help, although it seems like he'll have to do a lot to bring a championship back to the Bronx considering the problems in the bullpen there.

So I ask you: Is this the right choice for Clemens?  Is it going to make a difference in the AL East?  How much better does this make the Yankees?

I don't think it's a right choice for him. He is not winning a championship in New York because the pen is not that good and there is not much depth in that rotation. I still think Boston is the king in that division.

same. Toronto and Tampa will hang around till August, but Boston will, at worst, pull a St. Louis and just slide into the playoffs as the division champs.

Last year, recall that he couldn't make the decision until after ... May 1, I think? ... if he wanted to go to the Astros. This year, it's clear that if he wanted to be a Yankee, now was the time to ask -- panic is setting in and the price is going to be incredibly high.

What will he have left against the most offensive division in baseball? We'll see. Adding Clemens to that pitching staff is like putting a moonroof in a Yugo. It's still a Yugo!!

This is the equivalent of putting dog turd from the front yard to the backyard. The front yard will still stink afterward.

Nice attempt, Dre-lo, but Sharky said it best. Big whoop. Unless he pulls a 1984 version of Rick Sutcliffe, don't mean a thing.

Am I the only one who think Clemens is a professional whore when it comes to pitching these days?

Unsurprising hate for Clemens, but I am quiter surprised people don't think he'll be effective. He's been phenomenal the last couple of years, and even if you league-adjust him to the NL that still means he could put up a 3-3.5 ERA in the AL. It's a great move for the Yankees. PS: I hate Roger Clemens.

He'll likely go 8-7 with a 4.17 ERA. Unimpressive.

no way. Even with a 4.17 ERA he'll win 10 games. Sub 4 ERA. He'll be a good addition, but not enough to pull the yanks into the playoffs

Great move. Still not enough to solve their problems, but it'll help

The Yankees will easily make the playoffs. There is nothing wrong with their bullpen, actually a very good bullpen once they get some rest. Now we guys coming back into the mix our starting rotation is Clemens, Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, and Hughes. I will take that into the playoffs with a well rested bullpen. Watch how that 5.5 games back shrink in the dog days of summer. It's a long season and the Yankees have a great team. It should be an exciting year, let's watch it play out...

Correct. And would have made the playoffs without Clemens. Or if Clemens went to Boston.
