Breaking News: Chiefs Tackle Willie Roaf to Retire

10
Vote

It appears that Willie Roaf had not truly made up his mind a few months ago when we all thought this decision had come and gone for him, at least concerning the 2006 season. This is obviously an enormous blow to the Chiefs' 2006 hopes, and it would appear that the team was not prepared for this decision. Remember all that time last year that Tony Gonzalez had to stay in to block almost every down? Well, that's their starting point now unless Jordan Black or another young tackle can really come through.

I don't think so. Downgrade Tony Gonzalez or Kris Wilson? Definitely.

Losing Roaf and Richardson is rough.

Yes, but with Richardson gone they seemed to have a decent plan. It wasn't going to be putting all the weight on Ronnie Cruz. Richardson had been reduced to about 2/3's of the plays last year. I would guess Ronnie would do even less and that they put HBack-TE Kris Wilson into the fold to help (think Chris Cooley lite).

And of course Gonzo returns to some of that dreaded blocking duty. Again, that's if none of the young tackles steps up. I have more confidence in Herm seeing what he has in youth than Vermeil (loyalty over winning).

Downgrade LJ, but not enough to take him out of the top 3. You could justify still taking him #1, but I'd rather have Shaun.

I'd say only downgrade him from number one to number two. He's still a great back.

I think you have to take Alexander number one now.

I was touting LJ all year, but after losing Vermeil, Saunders, Richardson, and now Roaf...

I wonder if Roaf had to retire like Welborne had to retire. . . .

I would take Alexander #1 anyway, but don't downgrade LJ. He is still the man. Much of his success last year was from sheer determination and tackle-breaking, not following his blockers and running through holes like Priest Holmes used to. I think Larry should at least repeat his stats from last year.

jgov --- if larry repeats his stats from last year and plays a full season, he'll end up with 3000 total yards and 30 TD. I don't see that happening. If he gets to 1800 total yards and 16 TD, I'd be surprised.
