Breaking News: Bonds=756

25
Vote

by SSreporters

Barry Bonds has made history tonight against the Washington Nationals. in the bottom of the 5th inning, Bonds hit a ball to deep right center. It cleared the fence, making this his 756th career home run. Bonds is now the all-time career home run hitter in MLB history.

Open discussion on the story, and feel free to add stuff. Bud Selig was not in attendance, and has probably saved himself from blurting out something stupid.

Well...as far as baseball goes, you gotta look at the bright side...there are 15 (yes 15!) legitimate teams in playoff races...the yanks are now 5 games out of the east and .5 games out of the WC...the Indians, Tigers and Twins are ready to do battle for 1 or 2 playoff spots and Seattle is making it a division in the west

The braves, phils and mets are dogging it out in the NL East, the cubs and brewers are even making the central entertaining and the NL west has 4...yes 4 teams (and not the one including bonds) who are in contention...there are 6...(6!) teams within 4 games of the NL Wild card...

Its a great time to be watching good baseball...

While it may not be the best day in the history of the game, Barry should still be commended for what he's done. As a baseball fan since the day I emerged from the womb, I think we all need to quit complaining and saying it's bad for baseball. Look, we've had 5 years to get over the fact that this was going to happen. If Barry was as likeable as McGwire or Sosa, the outrage would be less, it would still be there, but it would be less. I congratulate Bonds, for breaking one of the records none of us saw falling 10 years ago.

I would like to congratulate Barry Bonds for being the HOME RUN KING. It is a great accomplishment and I for one believe that we must look past steroids in baseball and embrace the fact that we had a chance to see one of the greatest records in sports set. If you chastise Barry Bonds for steroid use then you also need to chastise all of baseball and ignore any records set during this era, because every player in the league falls under the same cloud of steroid suspicion. Before 1920 was the dead ball era, when offense was very low. In the 1930's, hitters played in bandbox ballparks. Before the 1950's, baseball was segregated, so the best white players didn't have to play against African-Americans or dark-skinned Latinos. The segregation continued to have an effect through the 50's as baseball slowly became integrated, and probably still had an effect into the 60's (think about it - a black 15-year-old in 1945 knows he can't make a living playing baseball, so he may give it up to do something else...that kid could still be pitching in the late 60's). In the mid-to-late 60's, pitchers had the edge as the mounds were really high. In the 70's and 80's, practically everybody used amphetamines to gain an edge. In the 90's and early 21st century, the majority of players (if we are to believe what players were saying) used steroids to gain an edge, until they began testing. My point? The steroid era was just another part of baseball history. So why should we choose to invalidate this particular record because of when it happened? Do we put an asterisk by Bob Gibson's ERA record because he got to pitch on 15+ inch high mounds?

Today is a sad day. Not for the reasons that most of you list. Not because it was Barry Bonds who chased and caught Aaron. Not becasue of anything to do with expanding hat size nor chest size. It would not have mattered to me today if it was Barry Bonds that broke the record. Wouldnt have mattered to me if it was A-Rod, Ken Griffey, Sammy Sosa or even Jim Thome for that matter. TOday, part of my childhood died. For all my life, the magic number in the game was always 755. When talking about the hallowed number in sports growing up, it was never DiMaggios hitting strak, Gehrigs iron man mark (since broken) or even the total number opf TDs in football history. I knew some of those numbers. Not all of them. Couldnt tell you what half the records are in baseball. One thing I could have told you was that THE number was 755. That died last night. And as a result part of my childhood died.

For the next couple of years the number is going to be in flux. Always changing. With every homerun that Bonds hits, the number will change. No one knows where it will settle. It might be 770. It could be 795. Hell, it might even creap over the 800 mark. But until it settles, we have no number. That number will always be changing. There is somethign a little unsettling to me about that. For the first almost 30 years of my life there was always that number. Now there is a bunch of numbers. I know it happened when Aaron hit 715 and for 40 more after that. But that was before me. That is before my youth. Last night, part of my youth died.

When I get older and have children, I will be able to tell him that yes, I was alive when Bonds broke Hank Aarons record, but it wont mean much to me. It might to my child but to me it means nothing. That number isnt the one that I remember. It will always be 755. Seven hundred fifty five homeruns. Its magical how it almost seems to roll off the tongue even. But my child wont rever that number. Not like I revered 755. He will be revering some number that has yet to be determined. No matter what everyone things of the guy, remember that no matter what till it is broken, it will be THE number for someone. But not for me. Not for me. For me the number will always be 755 and I can say that I know for a fact where I was on the evening that Bonds broke the record on August 7th, 2007. I was in a cemetary burying part of my childhood.
