Breaking News: Bill Walsh Dies

by SSreporters

This is tough for anyone who has followed the San Francisco 49ers, or people who have come to know him. The sports community has lost a legend in Bill Walsh, who succumbed to leukemia today at the age of 75. There will be more information on his death as this story develops. Source: [[1]]. Walsh died at his home about 1 hour ago.

I may not have seen him coach with the 9ers because I was born way after 1988 (his last year coaching with San Francisco), but as a sports enthusiast, I know that the man was a genius when it came to coaching. He was the mastermind of the West Coast Offense (which a certain Atlanta QB can't grasp), never lost in a Super Bowl, and is the pinnacle of sports in the Bay Area.

Walsh is responsible for many coaches getting top jobs in the NFL (with great success). Including Mike Holmgren, Sam Wyche, and Jim Fassel.

We've lost a legend in this sport, and you have to feel sorry for the 49ers. This is the 2nd year in a row when they're dealing with death. Last year, it was Thomas Herrion. This year, it's the most famous Niner of them all.

RIP

Bill Walsh

1931-2007.

Wow, I didn't even know that he had leukemia. If you want to know a little more about Bill Walsh, read the book The Blind Side by Micheal Lewis. He is not the main focus of the book, but there is a good amount in there about him. It really made me realize just how good of a coach he was and how much of an innovator he was.

He announced to the public that he was battling leukemia late last year. I don't know how long he had it before going public.

R.I.P. He is among Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi as being one of the greatest NFL coaches ever.

Because of this, you just have to root for the 49ers this year don't you?

And he was also General Manager of the 49ers too, which makes his three Super Bowls even more impressive.

I was hoping that any sports news wouldn't involve controversy. The one that will push all of that aside sadly, is Bill Walsh's passing.

They shouldn't just have the 49ers wear that special sticker on their helmet, it should be the entire NFL.

Oh man, I had to come back and login again after I heard about this...Bill Walsh, a true legend that not only changed the Bay Area's attitudes towards football, but also the game itself. The Niners will play with a renewed sense of dedication in 2007-08.

"This is tough for anyone who has followed the San Francisco 49ers like me."

Probably tougher for him to stay alive and keep battling leukemia.

It really bugs me when people get selfish about other people who no longer have to suffer. He was a great coach and a football revolutionary, but that doesn't make him invincible. He's resting peacefully now, that should give you peace - especially as someone who didn't even know him, let along a non-relative or close friend - not bring you down. Leave his legacy be about him.

I think you're right about that statement you made (that's my fault), but those with IQ's higher than a napkin can decipher the difference between family and non-family.

Bill Walsh is up there with the true greats of coaching. He coached what may be THE best modern teams in the early-90s 49ers, and this is indeed a sad day.

80s, rather. Still, the dynasty he made of the 49ers lassted quite lng time even after he left.
