Braves Deal LaRoche to Pittsburgh for Mike Gonzalez

10
Vote

The Atlanta Braves finally dealt 1b Adam LaRoche on Wednesday, sending him to the Pittsburgh Pirates for quasi-LOOGY Mike Gonzalez and a player to be named later. This swap had been in the works for weeks, as Pittsburgh wanted a lefty bat in their lineup and Atlanta wanted to bolster their ghastly relief pitching corps. There also remains the intriguing possibility that Atlanta will immediately flip Gonzalez to another club -- rumor has it that the New York Yankees desire Gonzalez's services as well. Stay tuned for more updates...

I can't figure out why the would want to deal Adam LaRoche in the first place.

Looks pretty good to me. And certainly worth the $3.7 million he asked for in arbitration yesterday...

How accurate are these long-term projections. Come on now, we are starting to lose perspective & reality when we start throwing out wild numbers.

I would venture that they're not super-accurate, since Bill James invented the process back in the mid-1980s (I don't need to tell you that the game has changed a lot since then), and he wasn't really all that confident in them back then. But they can be fun to look at, and I feel safe in saying that they approximate the general career trend for most players. It's all in good fun, just like when they said Ryan Howard would swat 806 career homers!

I should have a disclaimer: I make no claim to the accuracy of these projections. Use at your own risk. Use of said projections will still make you a better GM than Bill Bavasi...

Early 80's. I still have a beaten up copy Bill James' Baseball Abstract where he projected guys who would hit 500 Home Runs and Mike Schmidt fell just short, while Bob Horner and Dale Murphy were projected to both clear 500... go "figure"

Hey Davis, have you ever tested the accuracy of those stats? Is it possible to take someone like Manny or A-Rod and use stats from 5 eyars ago to see if they if they came anywhere close to what actually happened?

I'll do the projection for each, after their third season as a regular (100+ G).

I just think these things are a lot of fun. Obviously they're going to be wrong more than they're right (especially when we're talking about years down the road), but to me it's incredibly cool to project out what a Ryan Howard might do over the next ten years, or to look at guys who got injured (Tony Conigliaro, Ken Griffey Jr., etc.) and see what they might have been if they stayed healthy. Here, I've got one more...

The 2000, 01, 02 seasons for Manny were really close. That's pretty cool.

MMm.... As a Braves fan I dont know about that deal. I thought they wanted to hold on to LaRoche to be part of the building blocks they have iwth the rest of their young players. Interesting.

One word...arbitration. He asked for around 3.5 to 4 million and likely would have won his case. The Braves probably felt that much of an investment wasn't worth the expense, I tend to agree. I also agree the Braves will likely flip Gonzalez or Wickman for a mid-level first baseman before too long.

Yeah, $3.7 million is way too much to pay for 32 jacks and a .915 OPS from your first baseman...

Hey Davis, how come your projections don't have RBI's? And nice job with that, always fun to read.

When I revamped the old Bill James spreadsheet (to put in EqA and VORP), I deleted those columns by mistake! Next time, I'll try to dig up the master copy, which predicts runs scored and RBI...

Can you say "Career Year"? I expect his numbers would have dropped a bit this year, now its a lock..PNC is death for a LH hitter.

Maybe Schuerholz doesn't think he's the real deal, and is trading him at the peak of his perceived value...

Adam LaRoche has a condition that makes him seem very lazy and almost asleep at times, he's not a very Rah-Rah guy. Gonzalez is a cheap, serviceable lefty... What team owned by a cash-strapped souless corporation WOULDN'T make this trade???

How about the Pirates "throw-in?" Lillibridge is a very talented young shortstop who could end up being the best player dealt in this trade. He would have been a nice upgrade over Jack Wilson, but now he will probably end up in Atlanta's starting lineup very soon.

I didn't know Lillibridge was the throw-in -- he's a pretty decent prospect. Good defense, great plate discipline, lacks power but definitely can hit for contact... Kind of on the old side for A ball (22) last year, but could be a (much?) better version of Wilson himself someday. Good call, Bball.

hey, D-2-1 Contact... With the projections you listed above... you used year three as the start point, but HOW did the projections know that A-Rod would go to Texas, then New York, ManRam to Boston and Bonds to SF? That's eeeeery!

Whoops, user error. I should predicted A-Rod to the Yankees back in 2K1, and Manny to just quit and go back to the Dominican by 2003... Bonds' projection uses real stats up until the steroid effects kicked in in 2000, I should have made that clearer. Kenny Griff uses real stats through '99 as well, to show how utterly his career derailed after that season...

I get it.. it's not funny. Bonds took HGH, and testosterone precursors (and may have snorted dried leprechaun brains), NOT steroids. get it right punk =P I think I might try and become the Bonds version of "Derek Jeter fan" for some random fun and antagonization.

Haha, I forgot you were a Bonds guy. Personally, I don't care what he took, and I think it's funny to hear the knee-jerk moral outcry at the mere mention of BB's name. Asterisk-worthy or not, the man could/can rake. And you know I loves me some walks... Is my indifference toward Bonds inconsistent with my criticisms of Shawne Merriman earlier this week? Yeah. But Bonds never faced the Red Sox in the playoffs, either. So there.

I don't love him, but I appreciate his game. I know alot of people who know him personally (the Giants train in Scottsdale and he went to ASU) and from what I can gather, he's actually a pretty nice guy for a total asshole. I'm sure we have a lot in common. I want to become an over the top fan of a few things this year (wait til you see what I have planned), you know to try it out for a while... maybe Barry is my guy! Maybe he is... (tapping side of head and staring off to space)
