Braun vs. Pence

The NL has two phemoninal rookies this year, and it will be a tough decision when it comes time to announce the NL rookie of the year. Ryan Braun, the third baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, may have the edge over Houston Astros' outfielder, Hunter Pence because of the fact that Braun's team has a winning record, and is only a half game back from the NL Central lead.

Ryan Braun

Out of players with a minimum of 300 AB's, Braun is 7th in NL BA (one in front of Pence), tied for 11th in HR's, tied for 28th in SB's, 24th in OBP, and 1st in SLG %.  Braun is 2nd in HR's out of the 2007 NL rookies, 2nd in RBI's, 1st in BA, and 1st in OBP, and SLG %.  Here is Braun's stats:

2007- 319 AB, 59 R, 106 Hits, 24 HR, 62 RBI, 10 SB, .332 BA, .378 OBP, .643 SLG %

Hunter Pence Pence is the underdog, Pence started out hot, but then cooled down a little, as did his team, the Houston Astros (currently 57-71, 5th in NL Central). Pence's Astros are, most likely, not going to catch Braun's Brewers, who are 8.5 games ahead of the Astros in the NL Central.  It is not likely that Pence will catch up to hot rookie, Ryan Braun.  Pence is 6th in HR's out of all NL Rookies, 5th in RBI's, 2nd in BA, 3rd in OBP, and 2nd in SLG %, in all five of those categories Pence is behind Braun.

Pence's stats:

2007- 326 AB, 45 R, 107 Hits, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 8 SB, .328 BA, .354 OBP, .561 SLG %

Other Rookies to watch out for

It may turn out that Braun and Pence end up not being 1-2 in the NL ROY voting, Troy Tulowitzki (Colorado Rockies' shortstop), and Chris B. Young (Arizona Diamondbacks' centerfielder) are also in the running of NL ROY, so watch out for them as well, here is how they fare out.

Chris .B Young- 443 AB, 68 R, 105 Hits, 26 HR, 47 RBI, 21 SB, .237 BA, .289 OBP, .470 SLG %

  • Don't be fooled by his batting average, Young has power (leads NL Rookies in HR's), and speed (leads NL Rookies in SB).  Young is a full-time starter for the Diamondbacks, who have a three-game lead over the second place San Diego Padres in the tough NL West.

Troy Tulowitzki- 464 AB, 72 R, 136 Hits, 17 HR, 67 RBI, 6 SB, .293 BA, .364 OBP, .463 SLG %

  • Being another full-time starter in Colorado, Tulowitzki has done his part for the 64-63 Rockies (4th place in NL West), Tulowitzki leads all NL Rookies in AB's.  Troy is just 7 points from reaching a .300 BA, he leads NL Rookies in runs, hits, triples, RBI's, and OBP.  Tulowitzki could actually be the one to win ROY, I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Braun, Pence, Tulowitzki, or Young? You tell me what you think.

As much as I am not a fan of the Brewers, Braun wins this award. He has been nothing short of spectacular since getting called up. Pence is victimized not so much by the lackluster record of the Astros, as by missing a good amount of time after getting injured. Young's average is too low and strikes out too much to be considered.

Funny how Selig NEVER - not once - suggested that MLB contract the Milwaukee Brewers...

Selig never suggested that MLB contract any of 26-28 teams. Why would you contract the Brewers? And why is this relevant at all to this post?

And yes, Braun will win. Bud will make sure of it.

Right. Selig looked into contracting the four lowest-revenue teams, which did not include the Brewers. And if Selig is really pulling strings to get Brewers to win awards, he's doing a pretty bad job of it...the last Brewer to win a major award was Pat Listach taking the 1992 ROY.

Tulowitzki and Pence have been very good this season, but Ryan Braun is by far the best NL rookie.

Pence is out of it due to injury, and since Ryan Braun has better numbers than Pence in almost every category so far not even in September yet. Chris Young's average is too low, but if he makes the playoffs, I think he could probably be considered as a good candidate due to having great power numbers. If voters believe that Ryan Braun has enough games played for the season, they'll pick him over Tulowitzki as well. Witzki has a good average, but doesn't have much power; therefore, Braun > Witzki as well.

I gotta agree with you. He's a key factor as to why the Rockies are talked about this year. They aren't in last place anymore. Holliday, Helton and Atkins have a lot to do with it, but I don't think they can be 5 games behind first place right now if it wasn't for him at shortstop. He has a great range factor (5.42, comparing it to the average 4.06), a .983 fielding percentage, 96 double plays, and an unassisted triple play. You just can't leave the defense out. And on the offensive side, he has a .293 average (which is really good for a rookie as the average BA is .277), and his OPS is about .900, which is really good. He has 17 homers (4th on the Rockies, 1 behind Garret Atkins) and 67 RBIs (4th on the Rockies, and 1 behind Todd Helton). I'm definitely not leaving Tulowitzki out. He was my pick to win ROY until Pence fired up, and then Braun came into the picture...

AND it's something that Ryan Braun lacks. His range factor is 2.12 (compare that to the leagues 2.32), and his fielding percentage is a lousy .892 (compare that to the league's .955 at 3B). He already has 20 errors and only 6 double plays. Good point, Blue Carp..

Double plays? For a third baseman, that's almost completely luck. Your overall point is accurate, of course, but incorrect use of statistics is one of my pet peeves...

Anyone want to go back to the discussion the other day about how "defense helps win awards"? lol. I don't care how good or bad a fielder Braun is or is not, his offense makes him ROY. Hands Down!

Braun the last time I looked was leading the majors in slugging even though he doesn't have the at bats to qualify yet he is close enough for me to be called the leader. Pence looked like he would give Braun a run for his money but went on disabled list and is now out of picture unless Braun slumps and Pence gets really hot. Tulowitzki has had a super second half and has hit a lot of home runs. Chris Young deserves some consideration too.

Tulowitzki plays the most difficult position on the field and has been leading or tied with Vizquel for fielding for most of the year (with about 100 more chances than Vizquel) He's also played at the major league level the whole year and been better in the clutch than either Braun or Pence. He's a better athlete and all-round better player than either. He may, or may not win the ROY, but time will show that he's the superior baseball player.
