pretty pathetic . . . he kind of won by default. I thought Carpenter would have won his second, at least he showed flashes of dominance.

The guy was still very good this year. Maybe in most years he would not win it but he was very dominit most of the time he did have a streak of 30 innings scoreless he started out the year going 8 and 0 and had he not have had the terrible July he might have lead the D-Backs to the playoffs. So no this wasn't a great year but he was better then the rest and he showed how great he can be.

I can't believe how far back Roy Oswalt finished. It's a real shame that the only interest that sports writers take in the Astros is when Roger Clemens is pitching.

Yeah, Oswalt probably should have won the award. He was the only pitcher in the league with an ERA under 3.00.

This is the third year in a row he's been grossly underconsidered for the Cy Young. Easily, far and away, without a doubt, the most underrated pitcher in the Major Leagues. He hasn't finished higher than third in Cy Young voting, even though over the last three seasons he's 55-30 (average record of 18-10, even though he's had the kind of run support he gets as a member of the Astros). His ERA in those three seasons is 3.14 (3.05 in his six-year career), and he has averaged 185 Ks. Oh, and the highest WHIP he's ever had for a season was 1.24, helping him to a career WHIP of 1.18. How has he not gotten more consideration?

This season? No, he didn't hit the magic 20 win mark. But that's one of the problems with the Cy Young - in 2004, Randy Johnson had easily one of the most dominant seasons in recent years, but he missed out on the Cy Young because the D-Backs couldn't get him the win. Instead, they gave it to Roger Clemens, and Roy Oswalt finished third with his 20 wins.

In 2005, he won 20 games again, making him the only pitcher in Major League baseball to win 20 games in both 2004 and 2005. He went 20-12 with a 2.94 ERA, but managed only two third-place votes. I'm not saying he should have won the Cy Young that year, or even this year. I'm just wondering how he continues to get so few votes. He's not just losing the Cy Young, he's not even coming remotely close to winning it.

So, I don't know what you mean by NEVER. He won 20 games in 2004 and 2005. And it didn't really seem to matter this year, becauase nobody in the NL got to 20 wins. First place was a six-way tie with 16 (Harang, Lowe, Penny, Smoltz, Webb, Zambrano). I don't think Oswalt should be punished for having five no-decisions as a result of blown saves. In one game, he left with a 9-2 in the EIGHTH INNING against the White Sox. The Sox scored seven runs in the next two innings and eventually won in extra frames. That's the kind of thing he was dealing with all season. The team also had a tendency to explode for a lot of runs after Oswalt had been pulled for a pinch-hitter. Like one game against Milwaukee when he left in the 7th with a 3-3 tie, right before the Astros exploded for 7 runs in the last two innings. No pitcher should be punished for that.
