Brandon Webb's streak ends

Brandon Webb's shutout streak ends in the top of the first inning with one out verse the Milwaukee Brewers. Webb's streak had been at 42 innings 17 short of the all time record held by Orel Hershiser. Webb gave up a leadoff single to Gabe Gross who then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Craig Counsell, Prince Fielder got the RBI with his one out single. Webb then struck out Ryan Braun and got Geoff Jenkins to ground out to second. So Webb's streak ends at 42.33 innings.

An impressive run regardless. This guy's won a Cy Young Award, hasn't he? Keep pitching like that, he might get another one. Seriously, three straight CG shutouts? Who does that anymore, in this the era of the set-up man and the pitch count?

It is definitely an impressive accomplishment. Unfortunately it is an accomplishment that many will not appreciate simply because it is not the best ever. When it comes to pitching, if you don't surpass Orel's record, many will overlook truly how dominant 42 straight scoreless innings is.

The bottom line is even though the streak ended, Webb pitched well enough for the Diamondbacks to get a win, allowing 2 runs in seven innings, as ARI won 3-2. That is the bottom line, everything else is nice, but at the end of the day, the win is what matters.

I have a feeling that now that Webb's streak is over, ARI's hot streak will cool down, and you'll see them in 2nd place soon. I'm not saying it'll happen, but that's just my prediction.

Agree with Silencer that the win was the main thing after the Brewers had beaten the Diamondbacks in the last two games.

ESPN would have had a quandary of which game to highlight first if Webb had pitched a shutout since the 30 runs in a game is a huge story too even if neither Rangers or Orioles are going to the playoffs.
