Brad Lidge Trade Rumors Begin

As expected, trade rumors involving Houston's former closer Brad Lidge have started to fly. Personally, I think that the Astros should trade him, even if they don't get full value. As said by many other before,  before, a "change of scenery" would be of benefit. Possible clubs that could use his services are the Cubs, Pirates, Giants, Phillies, Royals, and Devil Rays. The Devil Rays look like the front runners in any trade involving Lidge because of their large amount of promising prospects. If the Astros eat most of his 5.35 million salary, its possible that something of the works of a  Lidge-Balldelli/ Jae Kuk Ryu deal can be done.

The Rays would be completely idiotic to give up Baldelli for Lidge. Baldelli is a good young everyday player. Lidge is an erratic closer. Baldelli is worth more even when Lidge is on for a whole season.

Its almost never a good idea to trade a position player for a reliever.

It would be a horrible trade for the Rays if they were to give up Baldelli plus anything for Lidge, the only way that would work would be if Pence and another prospect or two were coming back to TB.

Pence is a good prospect, but TB needs pitching. They are stacked with young talented players. Pence would only be useful as a commodity to swap for pitching from some other team.

I agree, but the Astros would have to give up something of value to get a player like Baldelli. Pence was the first name that I could come up with off the top of my head.

Personally, I think the Devil Rays are all wrong for Lidge. They need so many things more than they need a 30-year-old reliever who can't handle the National League. Best case scenario for the Rays is that Lidge becomes the third-best closer in the AL East (fourth best when BJ Ryan comes back); worst case is that he's no better than Seth McClung. Just doesn't make sense to me.
