After a few rough starts, $52 million man Daisuke Matsuzaka (W, 4-2) got his act back together as the Boston Red Sox (22-10, 1st in AL East) defeated the severely struggling Toronto Blue Jays (13-20, 5th in AL East, 9.5 GB) 9-3. The Red Sox hit four home runs for the second straight night, and Matsuzaka struck out 8 in 7 innings, giving up only one run and five hits.

W: Daisuke Matsuzaka (4-2, 4.80, WPA -0.28)
L: Tomo Ohka (2-4, 5.53, WPA -0.53)
S: N/A N/A

David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Mike Lowell, and Julio Lugo all hit home runs for the Red Sox as they scored 9 runs for the second straight game. Ortiz raised his average to a team-leading .311, but this was his first 3-hit game of the season (he went 4-5). Ramirez is on an absolute tear right now, extending his hitting streak to 8 games. In May, he's hitting .355/.382/.710 (he's only walked twice, hence the relatively low OPB).

Tomo Ohka (L, 2-4) dropped to 1-2 this season in 3 starts against the Red Sox. He lasted only 4 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks. The bullpen really didn't help the cause, as Josh Towers and Scott Downs gave up two home runs each in four innings of work. This was only the fourth time in major league history that two Japanese pitchers started against each other, and Ohka definitely got the short end of the stick today. The Toronto hitters didn't help that much, as Alex Rios (4-4, RBI) and Lyle Overbay (2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI) really represented the entire offense. Vernon Wells is in the middle of a mini-slump since coming back from illness; he went 0-4 with a strikeout.

Pitcher's Grade Point:

  • Matsuzaka: 62
  • Ohka: 24

Top Performers by WPA:

  • Red Sox: Daisuke Matsuzaka (.282), David Ortiz (.144)
  • Blue Jays: Brian Tallet (.029), Alex Rios (.092)

Coming Up Next: The Red Sox will go for the sweep of their floundering division rivals tomorrow at the Rogers Centre, with Tim Wakefield (3-3, 2.11, 0.92) taking on Roy Halladay (4-1, 3.59, 1.28).
