Tim Wakefield (W, 4-3) continued his disgustingly good start and lowered his ERA to an AL-low 1.79 as he and the Boston Red Sox (23-10, 1st in AL East) swept and shut out the struggling Toronto Blue Jays (13-21, Last in AL East, 10.5 GB) 8-0. Wakefield went 7 shutout innings and his knuckleball was nearly unhittable, allowing only three hits, walking one and striking out five. Roy Halladay (L, 4-2) had a near-mirror image start, getting roughed up over five innings and allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits and no walks while striking out two.

W: Tim Wakefield (4-3, 1.79, WPA 1.07)
L: Roy Halladay (4-2, 4.37, 0.94)
S: N/A N/A

Mike Lowell hit a home run in his third straight game, and Kevin Youkilis came back from his injury day off in a big way, going 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, and he now leads Sox regulars with a .319 average. Alex Cora went 2-4 with a run scored and is now hitting .415. Hideki Okajima pitched a perfect 8th and J.C. Romero lowered his ERA to 3.48 in a scoreless ninth.

New callup Jamie Vermilyea pitched very strongly in relief of Halladay, throwing 3 innings and allowing only two hits and no runs. He was called up after closer B.J. Ryan was put on the DL to undergo Tommy John surgery. Jason Frasor also pitched a perfect ninth. Adam Lind and Vernon Wells had 2 hits apiece, and John McDonald added one to represent the entirety of the Blue Jays offense.

Pitcher's Grade Point:

  • Wakefield: 71
  • Halladay: 4

Top Performers by WPA:

  • Red Sox: Kevin Youkilis (.167), Tim Wakefield (.155)
  • Blue Jays: Vernon Wells (.061), Jamie Vermilyea (.004)

Coming Up Next: The Red Sox head home to face the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game set over the weekend (I'll actually be at Fenway Park on Sunday!). Julian Tavarez (1-3, 6.48, -0.72) will face Brian Burres (0-1, 3.71, -0.03).

The Blue Jays hope to get back on track as they welcome in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Rays ace Scott Kazmir (2-1, 3.71, 0.25) faces fireballer A.J. Burnett (2-3, 5.09, -0.12) in the first game on Friday.
