In what must be a nice reversal from opening day for Boston fans, the Red Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals by a familiar score tonight, 7-1. Josh Beckett (1-0) looked real good for his five innings of work, allowing only two hits and one earned run while striking out five. Odalis Perez (0-1) took the loss.
Boston's normally sure-gloved third baseman Mike Lowell made three errors in the game, including two in one inning. He has made fewer than 10 errors in each of the past three seasons. He did knock in two runs. Kevin Youkilis also knocked in two on his first home run of the year. The Red Sox drew eight walks.
There weren't many bright spots for the Kansas City offense. Catcher Jason LaRue knocked in the only run on a sacrifice fly. Rookie Alex Gordon has yet to collect his first major league hit.
Tomorrow afternoon is the day that two continents have been waiting for, as Daisuke Matsuzaka makes his first major league start against Zach Greinke at 2:05 ET.
