W: Mike Timlin (1-0, 6.00)
L: Shane Marcum (1-1, 5.19)
S: Jonathan Papelbon (4, 0.00)

The Boston Red Sox (9-5) defeated the Toronto Blue Jays (7-7) today at the Rogers Centre and clinched the three game series, 2-1. Manny Ramirez hit his first home run of the year to tie the game in the 8th at three runs a piece, and an RBI triple by Alex Cora in the 9th put them ahead for good. Jonathan Papelbon (S, 4) worked a strong ninth for his fourth save in as many chances; he has yet to give up a run. Mike Timlin (W, 1-0) worked the 8th for the win, while Shane Marcum (L, 1-1) gave up the Manny homer and got tagged for the loss.

Toronto jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 6th inning on Alex Rios's 2-run home run off of Boston starter Julian Tavarez, who did not figure in the decision. Tavarez allowed 3 runs in 5 1/3 innings, on home runs by Rios and by Frank Thomas and on a double by Vernon Wells. Roy Halladay pitched very well and left the game in line for the victory, going 7 1/3 and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, but was let down by the bullpen.

Notes... Boston center fielder Coco Crisp had two hits on the day, both bunt singles, and drove in a run in the ninth on a deep sacrifice fly to Wells... Both teams turned two double plays, including a very close one which got Timlin out of a jam in the eighth... This has been the second straight season that Ramirez has started slowly; in 2006 he did not hit a home run until the 16th game of the season, and this was Boston's 14th game... Rios is swinging a hot bat, clubbing his second home run in as many games. He had 6 total bases today...

Coming Up Next... The Red Sox head back home to Fenway Park to face the hated New York Yankees. Curt Schilling (2-1, 2.84) will face Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.50) in the first game on Friday.

The Blue Jays travel to Charm City for three games with the Baltimore Orioles. Fastballs abound in the first game, with A.J. Burnett (1-1, 7.07) taking the mound against Daniel Cabrera (1-1, 3.66).
