Tomo Ohka (L, 0-2) couldn't contain the Boston Red Sox bats as well as teammate Gustavo Chacin did the night before, and he and the Toronto Blue Jays lost, 4-1. Tim Wakefield (W, 2-1) pitched another strong outing, going 7 innings, giving up 1 run and striking out four. Jonathan Papelbon struck out the side in the ninth while pitching around a hit and a walk for his 3rd save.
The Red Sox hit three home runs, all solo shots off of Ohka, coming from David Ortiz, Mike Lowell, and Doug Mirabelli. Mirabelli added another RBI to cap off a nice day at the plate. However, five Boston regulars (Julio Lugo, Kevin Youkilis, Manny Ramirez, Coco Crisp, and Dustin Pedroia) went hitless in the game. Ramirez, Crisp, and Pedroia are all hitting under the Mendoza Line, and catcher Jason Varitek is not far ahead at .212.
As for the Blue Jays offense, Wakefield shut down big boppers Alex Rios, Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, and Frank Thomas; the four went a combined 1-14 at the plate, with Thomas's double in the 6th the lone hit. John McDonald continued his hot start in limited playing time -- he's hitting .471 in 17 AB's, and should continue to see time with the injury to regular 3rd baseman Troy Glaus. Victor Zambrano (sorry Mets fans), Scott Downs, and Jeremy Accardo combined to pitch 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Ohka.
Coming Up Next... The AL East rivals complete their three-game tilt tomorrow afternoon at Rogers Centre, as Julian Tavarez takes the mound after 11 days since his last outing. He will face the Blue Jays ace, Roy Halladay.
