Red Sox win first series at Metrodome in 7 years

Paced by a 3-hit day from suddenly streaking rookie second baseman Dustin Pedroia and a strong start from Curt Schilling (W, 4-1), the Boston Red Sox (20-10, 1st in AL East) defeated the Minnesota Twins (16-15, 3rd in AL Central) by a score of 4-3. This was the first series win at Minnesota that Boston has had this century.

W: Curt Schilling (4-1, 3.28)
L: Sidney Ponson (2-4, 6.42)
S: Jonathan Papelbon (10, 1.46)

Minnesota starter Sidney Ponson (L, 2-4) started off the game on the right foot, striking out three over the first two innings, but eventually came apart. He allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings, 3 earned and struck out 5, but also gave up 8 hits and walked 4. Schilling went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 3 earned runs and 8 hits as well, but struck out 7 and walked only 2. Jonathan Papelbon (S, 10) pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save of the year.

Pedroia went 3-4 on the day, raising his average to a slightly less ugly .239, and J.D. Drew had two RBI to snap out of a cold streak of his own. David Ortiz was 0-2, but walked three times and raised his OBP to .412. The red-hot Manny Ramirez had the day off.

Torii Hunter went 2-4 with an RBI and extended his hitting streak to 21 games on the season. He leads the Twins with a .345 BA. Mike Redmond went 2-3, and the Twins had better hope he continues to hit since it is expected that regular catcher and reigning AL batting champ Joe Mauer will go on the disabled list in the next few days. Jason Tyner added a two-run single off of Schilling.

The Twins welcome in the division rival Chicago White Sox and Javier Vazquez (2-1, 4.02, WPA 0.32) on Tuesday. Boof Bonser (0-1, 4.55, WPA -0.11) meets him on the mound.

The Twins stink. They are tough to watch these days. The hitting reeks, but that's what happen when you rely on guys like Josh Rabe, Nick Punto (please bench him, Gardy), Luis Rodriguez (send him to the minors already!), and etc. Morneau is not getting it done. I know he is a slow starter, but at some point, it's time for him to start earning his keep.

To me, it's do or die this week.

If the Twins bomb here, I think their season is over.

I really don't want to hear that it's May anymore. The AL Central is too tough. Last year was a great feat, but there is no gurantee that it can't be done this year.

I am starting to think they are not that good.

no way. Cuddyer, White, and Mauer are out. You can't say that this is their week. They'll be fine. All that changed in the central is the Indians took over for the 3rd best team from the ChiSox

FP: Apparently, Patrick Reusse and Dan Barreiro don't feel the same way if you listen to their radio shows today. They basically said it's time to panic. I agree with them. I am sick of this nonsense about how it's May. It's a very dangerous attitude for a team to have. A championship team goes at it hard from April to October. Look at the Red Sox from 2004, the Yankees when they won championships, and the White Sox from couple of years ago. Great teams bring it from start to finish. I am getting sick of the poor starts that this team has had over the years.

Even with the team healthy, they had problems hitting.

I have hard time believing Cleveland and Detroit are falling apart. Twins need to stay afloat here. It was hard last year to accomplish what they did and it's hard to think they can duplicate again. This team can't take their chance.

Reusse and Barreiro are ready to jump off any bandwagon at a moments notice. Untill we have Cuddyer and Mauer back, it's not fair to jump off the bandwagon yet. Really? It's hard to duplicate that? Gosh, so that's why in their 3 straight titles run they had to play catchup to finnish the season. They've done it before, and they can do it again. Teams go through slumps in a season, it just so happens the twins are having theirs to start the season

FP: Last year was a great accomplishment. The other few years, the division was so weak and the White Sox had a heart of a tin man. Cleveland and Detroit ain't Chicago of old.

You can't have that attitude where you can turn it on and off. It seems Twins fans are so blase about this where they think everything will be okay. There is no gurantee. I don't want to hear about years past. Championship teams turn it on from start to finish.

I understand you go through slumps, but there is a right time for it. If you are going to slump, slump later in the year when you are 30 or move above .500.

I dissagree. I'd rather slump early than late. More time to make it up
