Red Sox win first series at Metrodome in 7 years
Paced by a 3-hit day from suddenly streaking rookie second baseman Dustin Pedroia and a strong start from Curt Schilling (W, 4-1), the Boston Red Sox (20-10, 1st in AL East) defeated the Minnesota Twins (16-15, 3rd in AL Central) by a score of 4-3. This was the first series win at Minnesota that Boston has had this century.
| W: | Curt Schilling | (4-1, 3.28) |
| L: | Sidney Ponson | (2-4, 6.42) |
| S: | Jonathan Papelbon | (10, 1.46) |
Minnesota starter Sidney Ponson (L, 2-4) started off the game on the right foot, striking out three over the first two innings, but eventually came apart. He allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings, 3 earned and struck out 5, but also gave up 8 hits and walked 4. Schilling went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 3 earned runs and 8 hits as well, but struck out 7 and walked only 2. Jonathan Papelbon (S, 10) pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save of the year.
Pedroia went 3-4 on the day, raising his average to a slightly less ugly .239, and J.D. Drew had two RBI to snap out of a cold streak of his own. David Ortiz was 0-2, but walked three times and raised his OBP to .412. The red-hot Manny Ramirez had the day off.
Torii Hunter went 2-4 with an RBI and extended his hitting streak to 21 games on the season. He leads the Twins with a .345 BA. Mike Redmond went 2-3, and the Twins had better hope he continues to hit since it is expected that regular catcher and reigning AL batting champ Joe Mauer will go on the disabled list in the next few days. Jason Tyner added a two-run single off of Schilling.
