The New York Yankees (9-13, 5th in AL East) snapped a 7-game losing streak and defeated the Boston Red Sox (15-8, 1st in Al East) by a score of 3-1 in the Bronx. Jeff Karstens started for the Yankees, but was struck by a line drive by Julio Lugo, the first batter of the game, and had to leave. Kei Igawa (W, 2-1), whose turn in the rotation had been skipped, entered the game and proceeded to record easily his best outing of the year. Igawa pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 6 while walking 4.
| W: | Kei Igawa | (2-1, 6.08) |
| L: | Tim Wakefield | (2-3, 2.59) |
| S: | Mariano Rivera | (1, 10.57) |
The Red Sox, in what has been a recurring theme since last season, failed to give run support to Tim Wakefield (L, 2-3). Wake also couldn't seem to find the strike zone, walking 6 on the day. Mike Lowell continued his hot hitting, getting his 20th RBI of the year for the Red Sox' only run.
Mariano Rivera (S, 1) pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the year. The Yankees were the last team in the majors to record their first save. The big offensive hero for the Yanks was catcher Jorge Posada, who hit a 2-run home run off of Wakefield and later scored off of Melky Cabrera's ground rule double. Alex Rodriguez continued to hit poorly against Boston, going 0-4 with two strikeouts, stranding 3 RISP with two outs.
Notes... Lowell also committed his 7th and 8th errors on the year, which is already more than he made all of last season... Boston center fielder Coco Crisp was ejected after arguing balls and strikes in the 8th... The Yankees again used five pitchers in the game, tying a major league record of 9 straight games... Manny Ramirez is still hitting on the wrong side of .200, sitting at .188 after going 0-2 with two walks and two strikeouts... No word yet on the severity of Karstens' injury.
Coming Up Next... The rubber match of this series is tomorrow afternoon, with Julian Tavarez (0-2, 8.36) facing Chien-Ming Wang (0-1, 5.68).
