Drew, Beckett Crush D'Backs
In the fourth inning of this game, my father, a rabid Arizona Diamondbacks (36-26, 2nd in NL West) fan, called me and asked if my Boston Red Sox (39-21, 1st in AL East) could turn it down a bit in their first visit to Chase Field in franchise history. I refused, and so did the Sox, burying the D'backs 10-3 on Friday night. Josh Beckett (W, 9-0) remained undefeated on the year with a strong outing and a lot of help from previously slumping right fielder J.D. Drew, who hit two home runs and had 7 RBI on the night, presumably to embarrass his little brother Stephen.
| W: | Josh Beckett | (9-0, 2.88, 0.96) |
| L: | Doug Davis | (4-7, 3.48, 0.40) |
| S: | N/A | N/A |
Beckett threw 8 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 8 and walking none (increasing his K/BB to 4.19 on the season). He did allow his 3rd home run of the year to young catcher Miguel Montero in the 8th. Arizona starter Doug Davis (L, 4-7) was fairly ineffective in his four innings of work, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits, including a home run to Drew and a leadoff home run by Julio Lugo. Davis continued to struggle with his control, walking five and striking out only two, which is a recipe for disaster against the uber-patient Red Sox.
Mike Lowell and Beckett were the only Sox starters to not get a hit, and Jason Varitek's error on a play at the plate allowed one of Arizona's runs to score. It isn't reflected in the box score, but the D'backs made several defensive and baserunning miscues which helped the Red Sox out tremendously. Officially the only error was on Eric Byrnes, but Conor Jackson specifically was very shaky at first base all game. Long man Edgar Gonzalez allowed another five runs in four innings of work in relief of Davis.
