Boston College Loses Perfect Season

It hurts. I'm not gonna lie, it hurts. But there was part of me that knew it would happen, and it's probably best that it happened the way it did.

Boston College's undefeated season came to a halt on Saturday night when the Eagles lost to unranked Florida State, 27-17. Matt Ryan's three interceptions proved costly, as his final one was returned by Geno Hayes for a touchdown that sealed the victory for the Seminoles. Despite his 408 yards passing, Ryan most likely lost his shot at the Heisman Trophy, but still may get an invitation to New York as a finalist. BC, ranked 2nd in the BCS, will be surpassed by Oregon, who had big win against BCS #4 Arizona State, and LSU. The Eagles could even drop out of the BCS Top 10.

The Eagles are still at the top of the ACC's Atlantic Division at 4-1, but Clemson and Wake Forest are hot on their heels at 4-2. BC beat Wake Forest in the season opener, but they're headed to Clemson to face the Tigers on November 17th in the conference's game of the year. Before the Tigers, they head to Maryland, then face Miami at home to close the season. They have not beaten the Hurricanes since Doug Flutie beat them with the Hail Mary at the Orange Bowl. The road to Jacksonville will definitely be rocky.

I didn't watch the game until 8 minutes left in the fourth. I spent the evening with my friends, after our plans had been foiled twice. First, we couldn't go ice skating because Syracuse had a club hockey game. Second, we couldn't see the movie Hairspray because the video was stuck in the VCR. We ended up staying in, watching Love Actually, and I watched the rest of the game after the movie. I rode home on the bus in sort of a daze.

It all made sense, in a way. At my internship last night, Dolgeville had lost to Onondaga in the high school Section III Class A Championship game, 28-21. I watched with a lump in my throat as half the Dolgeville squad balled their eyes out in the middle of the field. I turned to Kevin, the sports diector, and told him they're breaking my heart. "Life isn't fair," he said. It's almost like he knew how I would react after the BC loss.

The season is far from over. My baseball team just won a world championship. My pro football team is playing in the Game of the Year tomorrow. The glass is still half full. Thanks for letting me vent.

I was working at the game, and it was played abysmally by Ryan and Boston College. They got away with a bad game at Virginia Tech because VT wasn't capable of getting into the end zone, and the Hokies gave up on the 4 man pass rush, switching to 3 late in the game. But Florida State made the Eagles pay for screwing up.

And it wasn't that FSU was more talented than us, they simply played better. They didn't make mistakes, but we made countless ones.

Even on BC's big plays, FSU was able to keep us out of the end zone, then we'd screw around in the red zone, getting stupid penalties, and trying fade after fade after fade.

The stat of the game was Matt Ryan having 9 carries for 30 yards. Callendar had 7 for 22 and Whitworth had 4 for 14. I don't know why, but we decided not to run AT ALL. We had no patience with the running game. The thing about rushing the ball is that you must do it with consistency in order for it to work. You can't lose your patience because you gain 1 or 2 yards with a rush in the 1st quarter. Running the ball pays dividends in the 4th quarter, setting up play action, and keeping the defensive line on their heels.

And here's another comment in this already jumbo-sized comment, Florida State did a PHENOMINAL job protecting the quarterback. BC never had any pressure on him, and he was able to find guys left and right. So as badly as BC sucked, FSU played a near perfect game and deserved to win.

I was dejected after the loss, as well, Meg. But we're 8-1. We're 4-1 in the ACC. If we beat Maryland and Clemson, we win the Atlantic Division and go to Jacksonville. For my money, we're still the best team in the ACC, and we could very well be going to a BCS Bowl for the first time ever. That's something to be proud of and happy about.

This game stunk from start to finish. I follow pro football far more intensely than college but this was a big disappointment. Matt Ryan is really that great to warrant such Heissman hype from Mushberger and the entire network? Really?

He had been until last night. He had a shitty game against VT, but came through in the end with two amazing drives. Up until that point he had solid numbers. The thing is, there's no real Heisman standouts, and his team had been undefeated.

If he wasn't when the Eagles beat the Hokies, Dennis Dixon of Oregon is now a Heisman standout after he helped dismantle Arizona Sate.

Oh yea...really feel bad for you!! Try watching Syracuse lose at Pitt! Oh No...ONE LOSS!! And you still can play in the ACC Championship game and go to a BCS Bowl. The only bowl we have to look forward too is the toilet bowl when I vomit after the 'Cuse's next game. Get over it...better to be a one loss team then a 2 win team.

If syracuse had any dignity left, Meg would be strung up for being a traitorous whore.  ;) But 'Cuse has fallen hard and fast, at least hey are better than Notre Dame.

How can she be a traitor if she liked BC before going to Syracuse? Wouldn't she be a traitor if she STOPPED being a BC fan?

Meg may go to Syracuse, but she didn't list them as a fan. The good news for Meg is that she has the opportunity to follow in Mike Tirico's footsteps. Good luck Meg. And note...I don't think she is a traitor.

I can't say that I'm sorry about BC losing. It means that Clemson has a shot at going to the ACC championship game now. If we can take care of business next week against Wake, I can't wait to be at Death Valley for the BC game.

When was the last time BC won a conference title, if ever? We are still a full game up on anyone in our division and we are going to be in the ACC Championship game, which if win will get us into a BCS Bowl game. Not a bad season by any stretch. Yes we got our hopes up, but that is a good thing. Let's just hope this season results in some good recruiting, because the zone blocking scheme will be even better next year which will result in a better running game. I wish Ryan and Callender were juniors because we'd be pre=season top 5 next year, which gives us the comeback from one loss advantage that Oklahoma, Oregon, and LSU are using right now. The preswent is disappointing, but the future is bright if Jags can recruit, because we know he can coach.

BC is a full game up on anyone in the division. However, BC has to play Clemson in two weeks who with a win over Wake will only have two losses in the ACC. If BC loses to Clemson, they will not go to the ACC Championship game. That being said, the last two Clemson versus BC games have been great, with both going into overtime. The atmosphere is going to be electric, and I can't wait for that game.

You are correct, and I did some fact checking: BC has NEVER won a conference title. They have something big to play for still. The joined the Big East Conference in football when it was founded in '91, they were independent prior to that. So in 16 years of conference play they have yet to win one. They got close several times. But this year they control their destiny, win out and they go to a BCS bowl. The season is far from over.

I follow BC and rooted for them. Whenever I watch, Matt Ryan seems willing to force the ball into coverage, and have decision-making letdowns. It's hard to beat the best defensive backs under those conditions, and I think he got exposed last night.
