It hurts. I'm not gonna lie, it hurts. But there was part of me that knew it would happen, and it's probably best that it happened the way it did.
Boston College's undefeated season came to a halt on Saturday night when the Eagles lost to unranked Florida State, 27-17. Matt Ryan's three interceptions proved costly, as his final one was returned by Geno Hayes for a touchdown that sealed the victory for the Seminoles. Despite his 408 yards passing, Ryan most likely lost his shot at the Heisman Trophy, but still may get an invitation to New York as a finalist. BC, ranked 2nd in the BCS, will be surpassed by Oregon, who had big win against BCS #4 Arizona State, and LSU. The Eagles could even drop out of the BCS Top 10.
The Eagles are still at the top of the ACC's Atlantic Division at 4-1, but Clemson and Wake Forest are hot on their heels at 4-2. BC beat Wake Forest in the season opener, but they're headed to Clemson to face the Tigers on November 17th in the conference's game of the year. Before the Tigers, they head to Maryland, then face Miami at home to close the season. They have not beaten the Hurricanes since Doug Flutie beat them with the Hail Mary at the Orange Bowl. The road to Jacksonville will definitely be rocky.
I didn't watch the game until 8 minutes left in the fourth. I spent the evening with my friends, after our plans had been foiled twice. First, we couldn't go ice skating because Syracuse had a club hockey game. Second, we couldn't see the movie Hairspray because the video was stuck in the VCR. We ended up staying in, watching Love Actually, and I watched the rest of the game after the movie. I rode home on the bus in sort of a daze.
It all made sense, in a way. At my internship last night, Dolgeville had lost to Onondaga in the high school Section III Class A Championship game, 28-21. I watched with a lump in my throat as half the Dolgeville squad balled their eyes out in the middle of the field. I turned to Kevin, the sports diector, and told him they're breaking my heart. "Life isn't fair," he said. It's almost like he knew how I would react after the BC loss.
The season is far from over. My baseball team just won a world championship. My pro football team is playing in the Game of the Year tomorrow. The glass is still half full. Thanks for letting me vent.
