Boston Celtics Off Season

by The Widening Geier

Many Boston Celtics fans were hoping that the 2007 NBA Draft would net them one of the next generation superstar players, Kevin Durant or Greg Oden. When the ping-pong balls bounced the way of the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Supersonics, ownership and management apparently decided to forget about the future and focus on the present.

The plans began in earnest, with a draft day deal which sent the Celtics #5 draft pick to Seattle along with Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak, in exchange for Ray Allen. Allen has been a premier scorer in the league, and his deft shooting touch was expected to complement Paul Pierce's scoring. He was also coming off a year where he scored 26 plus points per game, and shot free throws at approximately 90%. However, he is also 32 years old, and had both of his ankles surgically repaired. On the surface, the move appeared to be more of a updated Pierce/Antoine Walker tandem. Celts fans began to talk themselves into Pierce, Allen, and Al Jefferson as a possible playoff trio.

A few weeks later, the Celtics front office was able to pull off the second piece of their plan. After months of speculation, and a potential deal which fell apart the the early stages, Boston was able to swing a trade for Kevin Garnett. Boston gave up a large chunk of their roster: Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, guard Sebastian Telfair and center Theo Ratliff (which is essentially an expiring contract), two first-round draft picks and cash. In return, they received one of the premier players of our generation. KG is a statistical monster, who has toiled in Minnesota as the lone superstar on a team often loaded with also-rans. Now he was headed to a team with a proud championship history and joining two players in Pierce and Allen who were also tired of individual numbers and hungry for an elusive ring.

From a talent stand point, the Celtics now have a trio that is unmatched in the Eastern Conference, and compares favorably to anything the West has to offer. What they then needed to do was to fill out their roster, as the Allen and Garnett trades had stripped the team of mostly every other serviceable player on the team. Holdover Kendrick Perkins, and new addition Scot Pollard, will be the options at center. Eddie House will compete with second year player Rajon Rondo for the starting PG duties. The Big Three figure to log big minutes.

So with all the changes made to a team that was unwatchable and in full tank mode last year, where do the Celtics stand? With three superstars who are also prolific scorers, Ray Allen will not average 26 ppg, and Paul Pierce will not average 25 ppg. Each will see shots which formerly went exclusively to them now going to the other. KG is a 7 foot monster in the East, and should not lose more than a point or two. The unproved point guards will have to show the ability to get everyone their shots and run a team with such skilled players. It remains to be seen if these moves will result in playoff success.

I do believe that the Celtics should make the playoffs next year. But in what spot? Cleveland is still a strong squad, even if they should not have been in the Finals. The Bulls are LOADED, and run 12 deep with skilled players. Detroit may have one more go-round in them, and bolstered all their key starters with youth and athleticism on the bench. New Jersey resigned Vince, and with Carter, Kidd, Jefferson and Kristic have a strong core. Miami has Shaq, D-Wade, and whats left of Penny. Orlando signed Rashard Lewis to a team which made the playoffs last year on the back on Dwight Howard. The Knicks added Zack Randolph to a team which is getting better and better. Toronto is flying under the radar with a very good team that is a tough matchup. So who is not invited to the party?

If everyone stays healthy, the Celtics are a 6-seed in my opinion. LeBron proved the East is wide-open, so anything can happen in the playoffs. I think that without strong or proven options in the middle and especially at the point, there are still too many holes for the Celtics to achieve more than a big win-loss swing, and a playoff birth with a possible first round win. Necessary improvements were made for sure, and I think they will be a fun team to watch.

They are betting it all to win now. Unfortunately, they may be a contender in the Eastern Conference, they are a pretender when it comes to winning the NBA Title. Boston did enough this offseason to get both the GM and coach a contract extension. After that, they sold away their future for some magic beans - that will ultimately not produce a championship tree.

My guess is that the Celtics will do as good as the Lakers do this year. Just because the Celtics signed two former All-Stars doesn't give them an automatic shot at the playoffs. HOWEVER... they definitely have the desire to make it to the Championship (which will probably not happen) but you got KG, Allen, and Pierce, all great players and all stars who still haven't won a championship. I'm not saying they'll go all the way, but coming from a Celtics fan, you can say that they're right where everyone thinks they are gonna be: in the playoffs, and then probably out in the first round.

The issue with the Celtics is that they still lack a solid post presence. Garnett is a scorer who is more of a finesse player, not a banger. He is not a Karl Malone type player, who will take the hacks and the bumps inside and get to the line. Second, are there enough shots to go around with these three? All of them are used to being the #1 option in their respective careers, and now all of them have to coexist.

For better or worse, this team has (probably) a three-year window. IF HEALTHY, the Celtics will probably win their division and enter the playoff as either the #1 or #2 seed in East, and likely make some noise in the playoffs. The problem is that they don't have the depth of talent to properly account for any injuries to the Big 3. If the Allen-Pierce-KG trio are all healthy for the next couple of years, Boston could easily compete for a championship. If not, Danny Ainge's high-risk-high-reward bet could cripple the franchise for another decade.

pierce and allen better average around 26 and 25... you're not getting much more than 20 points a game from the rest of the supporting cast so they better get 65-70 from the big three.

That Armchair GM "Boston Celtics Off Season" article is absolutely TERRIBLE!!!

So crap, for example:

"Holdover Kendrick Perkins, and new additions Scot Pollard, and the infamous Michael Olowokandi will be the options at center."

- Ummm Kandiman isn't on our team.

"Eddie House will compete with second year player Rajon Rondo for the starting PG duties."

- LLLOLOLOLLOLL!!!!!!! Ok buddy whatever.

"From a talent stand point, the Celtics now have a trio that is unmatched in the Eastern Conference, and compares favorably to anything the West has to offer."

- Too bad it's a team game and the rest of our roster is AWFUL.

"If everyone stays healthy, the Celtics are a 6-seed in my opinion."

- HAHAHAHAH whatever you say.

Completely trash article......

Thanks for the feedback. Informed comments like that remind me why I left this site several months ago....

Kandi was an error on my part, I didn't realize he hadn't re-signed in the off season. He is listed on the Boston Celtics roster on THEIR OFFICIAL WEBSITE (http://www.n...tics/roster/), but I might be crazy.

With Delonte West gone, there are two PG on the roster with NBA experience. Since Rajon Rondo has not proven he can successfully run an NBA offense, it stands to reason that a veteran PG like House will compete with him for the job. Glad I made you laugh though.

The following quote should speak to your team game/awful roster remark, right?:

" I think that without strong or proven options in the middle and especially at the point, there are still too many holes for the Celtics to achieve more than a big win-loss swing, and a playoff birth with a possible first round win"

Again, thanks for commenting pal. Next time try reading and researching a little.

Sorry, but just admit that fact that your article is complete junk.

Eddie House... PG?!?!? Really!?!?!? DUDE HE IS A SHOOTING GUARD. Get a clue.

If you followed the Celtics AT ALL, you would know that Kandiman ISN'T on the roster and WON'T be this season.

Pure rubbish.

They currently have 13 players under contract but need three players. Someone who can play point and the 2; someone who can play the 3, and another 4-5.

Here's my picks of who's out there, available, and who we can afford:

1-2:

Troy Hudson Derek Anderson

3

Jalen Rose Reggie Miller James Posey Shandon Anderson Eric Williams

4-5

Adonal Foyle Marc Jackson

Eddie House isn't a point guard? Are you referring to by position, or in terms of the way he plays? His listed position currently is shooting guard, but if you have actually watched him over the course of his career, he played in a PG role in Sacramento, Miami, and Phoenix. 6'1 guys who can't defend do not play shooting guard, no matter what they are listed as.

Danny Ainge himself has said they brought House in to spell Rondo at PG.

You further discredit your own opinion by offering up god-awful players (with the exception of James Posey) to fill out the roster. Really chief, you think Reggie Miller and Adonal Foyle are the answers to the Celtics problems? Troy Hudson (he of the 13 copy selling rap album) is going to fix things at PG?

I don't know how you can label what I wrote trash and rubbish, bravely hidden under the anonymous name, and then post such flawed opinions of your own.

The problem with predicting the eastern conference is that anything can happen -- most of the teams are equally talented. Boston has a good set of all-stars, but no reserves. That usually equals a good regular season and a first of second round playoff exit. All we know for sure is that the Cavs, Pistons, and Bulls are three of the top five seeds. The Celtics could sneak into the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th spot. The Knicks will finish at about 50% this year -- maybe they make the playoffs, maybe not. Perhaps when they have a chance to play as a team for more than one year. I love Philly, but they've got no chance. NJ could surprise, but they need to figure out what to do with R.J. Toronto lacks D and inside presence. If the Celts win the division but end up the fourth seed, I think that they'll be an early exit. Maybe next year, when Rondo and Perkins have a chance to improve and learn to play with their teammates, Boston is a 2nd or 3rd seed. But it's too early to expect that now. My prediction -- Boston gets the 4th seed, plays Cleveland in the first round, loses, but not by much.
