Can't win 'em all and I guess in this case, you can't even win when you lose. As a result of the 2007 NBA Draft Lottery, Neither Boston nor Memphis will have the first or second pick in the NBA Draft. In fact, they don't even have the third pick, as the Portland Trailblazers will pick first, followed by the Seattle SuperSonics, who are second, and the Atlanta Hawks, who get to retain their pick, previously sent to Phoenix via trade, will pick third.
The Memphis Grizzlies will pick fourth, and the Boston Celtics will pick fifth. Right now, somewhere in the greater Boston area, Bill Simmons and his father are crying.
Without even looking at the next lottery nine, we can all finally acknowledge that the draft couldn't have been rigged, because if it had, perhaps a deserving team would have gotten it, rather than a team in the northwest, that essentially, no one watches. Well, looks like the tides have changed now, as the Celtics are the cursed franchise, while the Red Sox appear to be on cruise control at full throttle.
Quietly, somewhere in Manhattan, Isiah Thomas is counting his blessings.
