Boog Powell (John Wesley Powell) was born on August 17, 1941 in Lakeland, Florida. He made his Major League debut on September 26, 1961 for the Baltimore Orioles. In 1962, his rookie year, he hit .243 with 15 home runs and 53 RBI. Powell played for the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers over the course of his 17 year career.

Most people believe that Boog Powell's best season was 1969, when he slugged 37 home runs, hit for a .304 average and knocked in 121 runs.

Known for his size and power, Powell was also an excellent fielding first baseman and an effective clutch hitter. Popular with fans as a jolly giant, Powell was a clubhouse favorite who still remains connected with the team with his food stand at Camden.
