Bonds on the Springer Show

No doubt most everybody on this site has heard or seen Bonds getting beaned by Russ Springer of the Houston Astros. To gauge public opinion of what happened, I went over to the ESPN boards to see what people thought. What I found surprised me.

There were lots of folks who thought Springer was a coward and a scumbag for what he did, Houston fans included. But I was surprised at the vitriolic and bitter comments left by MANY who absolutely hate his guts and LOVED seeing him get beaned. Now, while I am a Giants fan, I am no Bonds apologist and I do understand that he is not exactly loved, but man alive I couldn't believe some of the things being posted. The tone behind some of the words suggested that America was waiting for something like this to happen and a lot of that pent-up angst just poured out. I swear some of those folks wanted to eat Bonds's children!

Personally, I think that pitchers have a right to establish some authority over the plate but in this case Bonds wasn't really crowding it AND it took 5 pitches to rack up the HBP. I think Springer did himself, his ball club, and the city of Houston wrong by doing what he did as it smelled suspiciously like he just did NOT want any part of Bonds and could've went about it differently. Phil Garner is just as guilty as there was absolutely NO DEBATE when both of those guys were ejected.

Anyways, lots of people on ESPN's boards are trolls and/or uninformed sports "fans" who just mouth off. I respect the fans here at ArmchairGM a lot more and I wanted to know what everybody here thought about this issue as nobody's really posted about it just yet (which in itself was surprising). Tonight's game should be interesting to see how and when the Giants retaliate, as I'm sure Matt Morris will.

The talking heads seemed sure that Springer was headhunting Bonds and has some kind of vendetta, but I'm not so sure... Springer is really not a very good pitcher, and his control is mediocre. The best place to get Bonds out is inside. Do the math... He missed. Multiple times. If he wanted to bean Bonds, why a slider? It doesn't make sense. Springer is just a middling pitcher, and the ball got away from him when he tried to get cute, i.e. trying to hit a very specific target on the inside corner with a breaking ball.

I can't figure out why Springer would plunk the "Human Bobble Head Doll" other than some personal hatred for the guy. This is the 3rd time in a row, according to one media source, that Springer has plunked Barry Bobble Head. Who knows, but it adds intrigue into a really boring story of the "historic home run chase" that many people believe is a farce. You have to give credit to the incredible growing, shrinking, tiny-testical, bigheaded guy named Barry- he handled it well. Probably because he knew if he charged the mound, his teammates wouldn't show up to bail him out of a fight, but at least he used his oversized head to evaluate his options. DuBe

Having not seen it, I can't offer a substantive comment to the original article. But I do wonder if Bonds' teammates would step up if he charged the mound.

Just watched it. Springer has no business being in the bigs. If that wasn't intentional (and it looks like it was), he's clearly not a good enough pitcher to come into any game, 11-3 or not!

Yeah I give Bonds credit for not charging the mound and putting an old school beatdown on Springer...but then again his knees could've given out and we might've seen parts of him fly all over the place.

Barry Bonds destroyed the integrity of the game. I think every pitcher should do what Springer did.

Isn't headhunting on the mound--maybe not equally--sort of ruining the integrity of the game too?

Yep Barry Bonds was the only player to ever use steroids and solely ruined the integrity of the game. Where are those good, clean angels of the old days like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and Pete Rose? I sure do miss those clean, polite guys. Even a return of the saviors McGwire and Sosa would be nice but we must do everything possible to try and get the sole-juicer Barry Bonds out of the game. Come back Palmeiro!!

I have to agree witht he writer, pitchers need to estrablish some sort of authority over the plate, it's part of the game. On the other hand, I am not surprised if it was intentional. Not for the steroids thing but for all the freaking armour he wears. It's absolutly rediculous. I have not seen the beaning, so I have to take your word for it when you say he wasn't crowding the plate, but he usually hangs that damn bionic arm out over the middle of the plate. He deserves to get hit.

Head hunting? He hit him with a slider? And isn't Springer a kunckleball pitcher anyway? Headhunting is terrible and should not be condoned. But headhunting is throwing a fastball at someone's head. Hitting a player, even intentionally, is not head hunting and has always been part of the game.

I don't think Springer is a knuckleballer. He did throw a slider early in the count but I believe the last three pitches, including the one that plunked him, were all 91-93mph fastballs.

springer is NOT a knuckleball pitcher. he's a decent middle reliever who throws a FB 90 - 92 and a slider 87 - 88. First 2 pitches were sliders. the board gave the speed of the one that hit him - 89, so i thought it was a slider too - guess not. it didn't hit him in the pad. and he wasn't leaning out over the plate. it don't take a ML pitcher 5 freaking pitches to plunk a guy. if it did his teammates would give him horsestuff.
