Bonds And A-Rod:Pushing For The Homer?

I think it is very interesting to look at the stats Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez have put up since reaching 754 and 499 respectively.

First up, let's look at Alex Rodriguez. Since hitting number 499 against the Royals on July 25th, here is his hits compared to at bats: 2-20. That is an average of .100. That is not too impressive. The sad part is that before today's White Sox game he was 0-18, but he went 2-5 today which is a sign of hope. Maybe he has stopped pushing, and has just started playing again, maybe not. Either way, maybe he needs to just try to hit the ball and eventually one will leave the park.

You also need to look at the stats of Bonds since 754. In the 4 games since the homer he is 1-12. That also isn't too respectable. Bonds finishes the Dodgers series tonight, and hopefully he can at least get a hit if not another home run. Remember, who knows how long this could last because A-Rod only needs one more, Barry needs two.

So there are the facts about this. In my opinion, they shouldn't be pushing, but how could they not? They are both so close to big milestones, how can you not come up to the plate thinking about it. I think it would be great if they could find a way to avoid thinking about it, but I don't see how that is possible.

It's always tough to not think about it. There is a lot of pressure on you for every single game where you want to achieve a milestone. I'm still thinking of how the heck Frank Thomas did it so easily. Sammy Sosa had the same problem. Usually everyone does. I think it has to deal with all of the pressure in your home team's stadium. The crowd is on their feet cheering constantly for you to crush one. I think that's the main reason why...

Ryan Howard is also pushing for home runs. The injuries to Utley, Victornio and Bourne has the man pressing hard. hence, instead of bopping HR's, Howard has been collecting a lot of Ks.

Unfortunetly Utley is the sidekick in Howards case..even though Utley is a more complete and perhaps better player... Although Jimmy Rollins has been kicking some serious ass lately...after what he said in january he's responding with a "I'll be damned if that was a lie" kinda attitude...he's really getting my respect this season

I really don't think these guys are thinking at all about #755/#500 when they step into the batter's box; the reason these guys have gotten to where they are is that they focus on one thing when they're at the plate, and that is hitting the baseball. I think it's much more likely that they're both suffering random unlucky patches that happen to have hit them just before their milestone HR. But that's just me...

Of course they're thinking about it. Who wouldn't? Do you think they're really trying to just get on base instead? Especially with Bonds. I appreciate what AROD is doing. He gets on base, and he isn't selfish. He drove in two runs in the second inning of that 8 run 2nd for the Yankees. Instead of trying to hit one over, like he said, he wants to try to win ballgames. He's got all the time in the world to hit 500. Bonds, on the other hand is all about home runs, and you can see it in his swings.

Can't say I'm surprised. Didn't it take Bonds a couple of weeks to get #700?
