Bonds. Bury Bonds.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram recently reported that the Texas Rangers “will not rule out the possibility of signing Barry Bonds.” Why are the Rangers considering going after the player who likes his ‘roids shaken, not stirred?

Well, according to the Star-Telegram, new manager Ron Washington said he knows Bonds and that he can be an impact player. You know who else can be an impact player? Alex Rodriguez. Doesn’t mean I want him on my team.

You wouldn't like him when he gets angry...
You wouldn't like him when he gets angry...

There is a myriad of reasons why the Rangers shouldn’t even consider going after Bonds. Reason number one is that he’s only good for his bat. For a team that was top six in the AL in runs, RBI, slugging percentage and batting average, while in the bottom six in ERA and wins, a bat should not be such a big focus. We’ve seen this pursuit of bats in the past, and the only thing it seems to have done is distract from acquiring much-needed pitching. Focus on bringing back Carlos Lee and acquiring Barry Zito. Bonds isn’t anything this team needs. He’s not worth the focus, and he’s not worth the money.

Secondly, the Rangers showed improvement last year in their outfield defense, which is something that had been grossly lacking in years past. There is still room for improvement, but getting Bonds would be a monumental step backwards. He’s 42 and his knees are going on 72. He hasn’t been able to play defense worth a lick for about five years, and he has said in the past that he would not consider moving to DH. He’s an outfielder, or so he says. The jury is still out on that. At any rate, until I see something to indicate that he’s given up on that pipe dream of continuing to patrol the outfield, it stands as a big reason the Rangers shouldn’t go after him.

But, there is still the biggest reason the Rangers shouldn’t go after him. Bonds is still a lightning rod for controversy. For a team that thrives on staying out of the national media and flying beneath the radar, that’s not the kind of publicity they want. Especially when it’s negative publicity. In 2005, after Kenny Rogers had his run-in with a local camera man, the Rangers already disappointing season went into a tailspin. Same thing in 2004 when Frank Francisco went WWE on some fans in Oakland.

"What do you mean side effects?"
"What do you mean side effects?"

I say let him go to a big market team that doesn’t mind dealing with the negative publicity. Let him to go New York, or Boston, or Los Angeles. Heck, let him stay in San Francisco. But he doesn’t belong in Texas. This is an open plea with Tom Hicks - don’t bother. Don’t even give him a call. Let that dead dog lie. When the Rangers win the AL West behind Barry Zito’s pitching, you’ll thank me. But, don’t feel the need to thank me publicly. Sending a bouquet of syringes to Bonds will be thanks enough.

Wow, ASwaff, you've been kinda salty lately... They'd sign Bonds for one thing and only one thing (as would any other team) - #756

Just because I hate blatent ignorance so much, there's NO evidence, rumor or even innuendo that Bonds EVER used a syringe... the supplements Conte gave him were applied through oral, sublingual or topical methods. It drives me nuts with the needle talk.

Oh yeah, at LEAST 400-500 OTHER players have taken supplements (including Rangers), so get over it already. Stop living in the past.

There actually has been innuendo that Bonds used a syringe. There was an extensive accusation to just that point Game of Shadows. That doesn't mean I believe it, because I don't. I just wanted to make some steroid jokes. Can't you appreciate a steroid joke?

I know a lot of other players have used them, but 400-500 is a number that, like the accusations against Bonds, can't be substantiated by anything more than rumor and speculation. The number of players using them notwithstanding, I've taken a hard and consistent stance against their use, and don't condone anyone using them, regardless of team.

I just can't believe you can't appreciate a steroid joke. It's only a joke, Manny!

OK, a joke... Oh, I get it now. wait for it... wait for it... crickets.

(it's a very tired joke; yea, verily)

His head is big, blaa haa... He's a tax evader, tee hee... Bonds is an a-hole, snooooore...

Steroids are never funny. People's lives get destroyed and many of the users that pay the ultimate price (like Burt Hooten's boy) NEVER get to the bigs...

But since you (and all the other PUNdits) have never taken steroids; therefore have never done ANYTHING wrong, you can point fingers and sneer from your ivory tower, casting blame. It's not Bonds' fault you're better than ever one else, I guess...(see I CAN make a steroids "joke" too)

(nothing personal, Aswaff) I grow weary of the "I hate Bonds because he's a great player regardless, but I'm holier than him" I don't like to tell people what to do, but leave the dude alone already. He'll deal with his choices in life.

It's not a matter of being holier than him, Manny. I don't like cheaters. I don't condone cheating in any form. It's not because I've never cheated in anything, it's not because I think I'm morally superior. But I think that baseball can do more to minimize the cheating, and I'd like to see that.

That said, let me say that I have been salty lately. A lot of it is bitterness over the ridiculous and stupid campaign ads I've been subjected to the last couple of weeks. Now that the election has come and gone, I think I'll be a more cheerful person.

And let me say another thing in defense of Bonds. Yes, in defense of Bonds. You mentioned that teams only want him for 756. That's a big reason I think he should either stay put in San Francisco, or go to New York. I feel those are the only two places that his breaking of that record will be appreciated the way it should be. Texas won't show it the appreciation that such a phenomenal feat ('roids or not) deserves, and I don't think many other cities would. Let him stay in SF and get the acclaim he's earned.

I agree! (especially on the political ads stuff) All I know is many guys have been forgiven (Sheffield, Giambi to name two) while Bonds STILL gets vilified.

Until I see one Giambi or Sheffield bashing article compared to the (how many?) anti-Bonds articles, I don't believe you... the numbers don't lie. Everyone else gets a free pass, meanwhile Bonds CONTINUES to get blasted. (even in the offseason)

Well, at least we can also agree it's not a race issue, as some idiots have tried to assert. Is it any big secret that people don't like Bonds? No. Did he bring it upon himself? You better believe it. He's been an arrogant and rude from day one, and so people have been overly critical of him.

And it's not even like he hasn't had the chance to redeem himself. When he broke the homerun record in 2001, sports pundits all over the place were asking if we might have been wrong about Bonds in an effort to make him a likeable hero like Babe, Maris and McGwire. But he couldn't take advantage. He continued to be a jerk, and nobody's mind was changed about him despite the media's efforts.

I don't know that it makes it fair for all the criticism that's rained down on him. Certainly it's been excessive at times. But it's hard for Bonds and Bonds apologists to try and suddenly turn around and play the victim card. When you spend a career acting like a punk, expect people to treat you like a punk.

OK, so it's ok to essentially say you want Barry Bonds dead (BURY Bonds?), but don't make fun of a hungry kid (who is probably WELL out of his misery)? Way to pick and choose...

It's a joke, not a serious death threat. Anyone with a pulse can tell the difference. I know you're smarter than that, Manny. You can tell the difference between making a pun of someone's naming and using an innocent, starving kid for cheap humor.

I had a bigger problem with the baseball card anyway. It was an '87 Topps card with a '86 Don Russ "The Rookies" logo on it... that's just plain WRONG!!!

Bonds used steroids. Sheff, Giambi Juice, Nails, McGuire, and more guys than we'll ever know. Pitchers we've never heard of. Managers knew. Trainers knew. Owners knew. The FBI knew. Hell, the president of the United States knew. Gator wants Jose's MVP, but how do we know he wasn't juicing. I'm rambling. My point is evrybody used, everybody knew. We care about Bonds because he's unlikable. And because he's about to break the holiest of all records.

Meanwhile Hank Aaron played during the height of the Greenie Era. Of course, Amphetamines were illegal, but not by baseball's rules. Babe Ruth played when cocaine and opium were still medicine cabinet staples. Cocaine was first regulated during his rookie year. Of course, it wasn't against baseball's rules.

Barry Bonds took HGH and other designer enhancers (not yet scheduled by the FDA) and of course, also NOT on baseball's banned list until last year.

Nolan Ryan, Mike Schmidt, Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Pete Rose and Cal Ripken ALL played with performance enhancers that are banned today. Hell, Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter on LSD. So to say you don't want records tainted is naive. How far do we REALLY want to pull the veil back?? And what does pulling the veil back accomplish? It's a freeking game (in more sense than one)

If you want to keep saying that vilifying Bonds is about cheating and drugs/enhancers; you're either a blatent fool or a blatent liar.

Lots of people using and everybody using are two very different things. You should back off that statement. Not everyone was using steroids. Yeah, everybody knew, and that's why baseball is catching so much crap over their drug policy now. They pretend they're clean, they pretend they want to police themselves, but they didn't and they still don't.

As for records not being tainted, I'm not that worried about that. There's always shady stuff in sports, especially in a game like baseball where they've made cheating a science. But I expect baseball to crack down when they find out guys are cheating. And although I'm not worried about untainted records, I would like to watch a baseball game without a bunch of cheaters. I'm all for whatever baseball can do to minimize that.
