Bonderman extended by Tigers

The Detroit Tigers announced today that they have signed pitcher Jeremy Bonderman to a four-year, $38 million extension that keeps him a member of the team until after the 2010 season.

Bonderman, 24, was 14-8 with a 4.08 ERA for the AL Champions last year. He ranked second in the American League with 202 strikeouts.

Seems like a hell of a steal considering Jason Marquis just got $7 million per, and Ted Lilly got $40 million for four years. Bonderman is a stud, and will only get better.

Agreed. This is a good deal even before considering the huge inflation of salaries this year. Bonderman is coming off his best season and is still in his early 20s.

I definitely, definitely agree. Bonderman put up a 3.30 FIP ERA (lower than his "real" ERA of 4.08, meaning he was actually unlucky last year) at age 23, and pitchers don't peak until 28-ish. The sky's the limit for this kid, and getting him locked in at $9.5 million/year is a tremendous bargain.
