Boise State wins one for the little guys - and the need for playoffs

21

by user Douglasvgibbs

In overtime, Boise State decided to go for a two point conversion, and beat the Oklahoma Sooners 43-42.

The Boise State Broncos did for College Football what the Utah Utes did a couple years ago. They reminded the BCS that the little guy deserves a chance at the big boys. Undefeated is undefeated.

Okay, I understand that little thing about strength of schedule, and so forth, but Boise State has accomplished everything asked of them, and has finished the season undefeated. Shouldn't they at least get a shot at the National Title?

Don't get me wrong, I don't want College Football to become like NCAA Basketball where the season is meaningless because 65 teams get invited to the big tourney. That would be ridiculous. But what about a four team playoff that includes teams like Boise State if they finish undefeated?

Some will say, hey, with a four team playoff, the number five team will complain, and you can't insert a small school just because they go undefeated over a larger school of obviously better talent.

Perhaps.

But come on, is the system as it is really any good?

One thing is for sure. Boise State has made everyone think. Perhaps next time a little guy goes undefeated, they will receive a little more respect from the BCS elitists. Boise State deserves the win, and deserves to hold their heads up high.

Congrats Boise State Broncos.

This had to be the best bowl game I've ever seen. The underdog Boise State Broncos never gave up and proved all the critics wrong. Clearly, college football lives in Idaho! They deserve a shot at the BCS Championship, but until things change it won't happen. Probably the best they can hope for is #2 in the final standings.

Man that was freaking awesome.

Ian Johnson had a game to remember. He showed toughness out there. That quarterback did a good job too.

I gotta admit that I was very depressed when Oklahoma tied it and then led it. This was over. Boise State looked like a tired team and it showed. Oklahoma just seemed to have more strength and depth. It was like a bully beating up on midgets there at the end. This is where great coaching comes to play. Their coach did not tell his players to give up. He told them to keep fighting and keep working. Everything paid off. This is what the Gophers need from a football coach in their next hire. They need a coach who knows how to have a clue like Boise State's.

No question that it was beautiful. I never thought I would see a day a mid-major team would go beat a big-time team. Oklahoma played very hard and they played to win. Give em credit for what they did too.

Boise State did not back down. They earned this win. Those fans that traveled to Glendale will remember this for a long time. Even Oklahoma fans have to admit that this was a good story even at their expense.

I wanted to see Boise State win this one in the worse way. You can talk about the winner of the national championship game, but to me this will mean nothing compared to Boise State. No disrespect to Florida and Ohio State.

Those fans up at Idaho are in cloud nine for sure and they should be.

This iwas the second best moment I ever watched in sports. Second to the Twins winning it all in 1991. The Wolves run used to be my second, but what Boise State did was special since they were little engine that could.

I do believe that there should be a playoff for the BCS.

Ian Johnson will ride this season to having another great year last year, and be a first rounder in the 2008 draft. He'll then be a bust in the NFL...

You saw this media hype machine work wonders with my alma mater, Bradley University. Our center from last year, Patrick O'Bryant, had great performances in the NCAA Tourney when BU upset Kansas and Pitt. POB was drafted #9 overall by the Warriors, and was just sent down to the NBDL already. He's a good ballplayer, but not a lottery pick in any year.

Ian will do the same thing.

Ive been thinking about this all day and night and I came to a conclusion. If Florida beats OSU for in the BCS championship, I WILL give my #1 vote to Boise State. They did what they were asked and deserve it. Also any blow I can give to the BCS I am eager to do.

I didn't see the game at all, but I was at the grocery store and a family of 5 Oklahoma fans (in town for the game, dressed head to toe) were in the line behind me and I told them they were going to lose -screw the (Not-So) Big 12. They didn't call me an a-hole directly, but they wanted to... I enjoyed it thoroughly. Also, Ohio State fans be warned: There is Buckeye crap ALL over town. Inflatable, hanging, waving, etc. I have learned through the years of big bowl games in Arizona - the more crap promoting your team, the more likely your team loses... just saying.

Considering the Fiesta Bowl has become Ohio State's 2nd home field, Scarlet and Gray in 'zona isn't a suprise. The last time the Buckeyes won (err, played) out there the stadium was pure red.

Sun Devil Stadium and Univ of Phoenix Named Stadium are on opposite sides of town... (although, the new stadium IS closer to the town of Buckeye!!!)

And don't forget that win one for the "little guys" also includes Papa, Hefty, Handy, Brainy, and the rest, as Boise State went undefeated on its distractingly blue (make me smack my TV for nothing) home "Smurf-Turf" this year.

You can say that about the Fiesta Bowl, but I wouldn't because there was nothing Smurfy about it.

Besides, each team that played them at home had the opportunity to go undefeated on Smurf Turf, but failed.
