Born on September 26, 1925 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Bobby Shantz (Robert Clayton Shantz) played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Colt .45s, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs over the course of his 16 year career. Shantz broke into the bigs on May 1, 1949 with the Philadelphia Athletics, and put up a 3.40 ERA in 127 innings pitched in 1949, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Bobby Shantz's best season was 1952, when he posted a 2.48 ERA, won 24 games and struck out 152 batters.
