Born on November 21, 1851 in Baltimore, Maryland, Bobby Mathews (Robert T. Mathews) played for the Ft. Wayne Kekiongas, Baltimore Canaries, New York Mutuals, Cincinnati Reds, Providence Grays, Boston Red Caps and Philadelphia Athletics over the course of his 15 year career. Mathews broke into the bigs on May 4, 1871 with the Ft. Wayne Kekiongas, and put up a 5.17 ERA in 169 innings pitched in 1871, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Bobby Mathews's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1874, when he posted a 2.30 ERA, won 42 games and struck out 101 batters. However, others believe that it was 1885, when he posted a 2.43 ERA, won 30 games and struck out 286 batters.
