Born on June 25, 1954 in Cushing, Oklahoma, Bob Shirley (Robert Charles Shirley) played for the San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals over the course of his 11 year career. Shirley broke into the bigs on April 10, 1977 with the San Diego Padres, and put up a 3.70 ERA in 214 innings pitched in 1977, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Bob Shirley's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1977, when he posted a 3.70 ERA, won 12 games and struck out 146 batters. However, others believe that it was 1978, when he posted a 3.69 ERA and struck out 102 batters.
