Born on July 14, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bob Purkey (Robert Thomas Purkey) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals over the course of his 13 year career. Purkey broke into the bigs on April 14, 1954 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 5.07 ERA in 131.1 innings pitched in 1954, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Bob Purkey's best season was 1962, when he posted a 2.81 ERA, won 23 games and struck out 141 batters.
