Born on August 10, 1923 in Newport, Virginia, Bob Porterfield (Erwin Cooledge Porterfield) played for the New York Yankees, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs over the course of his 12 year career. Porterfield broke into the bigs on August 8, 1948 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 4.50 ERA in 78 innings pitched in 1948, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Bob Porterfield's best season was 1953, when he posted a 3.35 ERA, won 22 games and struck out 77 batters.
