Bob Knight (Mr. 880): the best of all time?

8
Vote

by user Fangini

The question was posed this morning on cold pizza. Would you rather have Bob Knight or Dean Smith claim stake to the title of best ncaa coach in basketball history. The answer is simple and clear.

While Bob Knight is a tremendous x's and o's coach he coached all of his teams in dictatorship style. Knight insisted on recruiting a certain type of player that would run through a wall for him as opposed to obtaining the top recruits that North Carolina would obtain year after year. The point is Knight did not go after the Jordan's, Stackhouse, Wallace, Carter, Worthy type of player. Knight did not want to deal with the ups and downs of moody college superstars. Knight wants the type of old school player that simply says yes sir, no sir, right away sir, how do you like your burger cooked sir. In other words, Knight is and always has been a great coach who could not adapt to the modern day player.

On the other hand, Dean Smith has been able to prove over his tenure of coaching that he was not only a great strategist on the chalkboard but he also had the ability to adapt to the modern player over the course of time. He was very good at developing the comraderie and relationships with the new age player that coach Knight was unable to do. There is no question that if you were to place Dean Smith in the head coaching positions that Bob Knight has had over his career that Dean Smith would certainly produce the same results as Knight. However, can the same be said if you were to place Coach Knight into Dean Smith's shoes. On the contrary you probably would have seen Rasheed Wallace go mano-e-mano with Knight time after time. You think good ole Stackhouse wouldve listened to that old school coach? I think not

Bob Knight is a great coach, but Dean Smith gets my vote.

If it to win basketball game, I'll take Smith. If it is to cement discipline and a strong work ethic that transcends the game of basketball, I'll take Knight.

Haha Manny seeing both those proteges, I might have to say that Rick Patino is the best coach of all time (despite the success of Roy Williams for Dean).

I will say though Bob Knight has been an amazing coach for 22 years now. He i stuborn, He is a bully, he is a hardass. Despite that his graduation rate is exceptional especially for the success rate he continues to achieve. Knight runs a clean program, any contravesry around his teams is centered around him and not his kids.

If Bob Knight is not the best of all, He is making all the right arguments to be the greatest coach of all time.

If you did, I'd have to "I'll kill you!! I'll kill the man!!!!"

I always liked how Chaney was the only coach that looked just like the mascot!

Fave Cheney Story - "No talking on the bus after a loss!" One time early in the season, TU lost a non-conference game and there was some chatter on the bus. Chaney had the driver pull the bus over, turn off the engine and he VERBALLY ABUSED the team with a never-ending tirade and belittling. THEN he informs them that the standard 5 am practices they were used to just turned to 4 am with an hour more of running. Since they can handle losing so easily, they can handle losing a little extra sleep, right?

Well, later that season, they lose another game and they're on the bus ride home and a mechanical fire starts in the back of the bus and NO ONE said a word, they just slowly crept forward to avoid the flames and smoke... hilarious!

Chaney absolutely cared for his players MORE than any coach ever, more than winning. he taught them to be men and cared for them more than his own family. Name the last NBA lunkhead from Temple... I'll give you as much time as you like to figure it out...

He is an extraordinary man, albeit times has passed him by a bit... there will NEVER be another John Chaney.

I agree Manny, I had the opportunity to meet Chaney when I was being recruited and looked looking at Temple several years ago. The only reason I even made the trip to Phily was to see and meet him, and it was worth the trip without a doubt. I still to this day consider it an honor to have met him. The love he had for his players, and their well being as men, is something that each and every coach should aspire for.

I know what you mean, but I don't like being yelled at, but I'm pretty much un-coachable in all respects. (Also why I never considered the Armed Forces and am a bane to my supervisors at work, etc...)
