Bob Grottkau (Robert Fred Grottkau) was born on March 22, 1937 in San Rafael, California. After going to high school at Oakland (CA), Grottkau attended the University of Oregon. Grottkau made his professional debut in the NFL in 1959 with the Detroit Lions. He played for the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys over the course of his 3 year career.
