Born on November 24, 1930 in Lafayette, Indiana, Bob Friend (Robert Bartmess Friend) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets and New York Yankees over the course of his 16 year career. Friend broke into the bigs on April 28, 1951 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 4.27 ERA in 149.2 innings pitched in 1951, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Bob Friend's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1960, when he posted a 3.00 ERA, won 18 games and struck out 183 batters. However, others believe that it was 1963, when he posted a 2.34 ERA, won 17 games and struck out 144 batters.
