Blue Jays Sign Frank Thomas to Two Year Deal

The Toronto Blue Jays signed DH Frank Thomas to a two year deal worth $18 million, with an option for the 2009 season.

The thirty-eight year old Thomas was named the AL Comeback Player of the Year by the MLS Players Association after mashing 39 home runs and driving in 114 RBI for the Oakland Athletics

Well he did seem to put some spark back into career last season in Oakland. Maybe he has 2 more good years left in him.

Classic Moneyball to grab Thomas off the scrap heap, get an unbelievably surprising year out of him, and let him go when the price gets too high. Odds are he'll never come close to his 2006 production again, much less be worth $18 million over 2 years.

You can pencil him in for 25 homers and a ton of walks, even if he doesn't approach 2006 stats. That's not worth $9m next year, but injuries aside, it's still a good price floor. I don't think it's a bad contract.
