Blackmon Injures Thumb

In his press conference on August 28, Green Bay Packers' head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that back up cornerback Will Blackmon is wearing a cast. The cast is due to a Bennett Fracture on his thumb (the base of the thumb). Unless properly treated, a Bennett Fracture can lead to an unstable arthritic joint and will adversely affect the ability to grip.
You may wonder why this is a big deal. The Packers kick return units were especially anemic last season. This pre-season, Blackmon leads the league in return yards.
In practice, Blackmon has caught the ball and the cast does not appear to have any adverse effects. He is scheduled to receive the first punt in the Thursday game against Tennessee so we should have a good idea how it fares.
McCarthy stressed several times that he wasn’t concerned and he did not know how long the cast would be required.
As a precautionary evaluation, McCarthy plans to try several other players in kick return duties against the Tennessee Titans.
