Born on April 2, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, Billy Pierce (Walter William Pierce) played for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants over the course of his 18 year career. Pierce broke into the bigs on June 1, 1945 with the Detroit Tigers, and put up a 6.34 ERA in 55.1 innings pitched in 1948, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Billy Pierce's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1957, when he posted a 3.26 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 171 batters. However, others believe that it was 1955, when he posted a 1.97 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 157 batters. Another season that some believe was Billy Pierce's best was 1956, when he posted a 3.32 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 192 batters.
