Born on February 10, 1933 in Whitmire, South Carolina, Billy O'Dell (William Oliver O'Dell) played for the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves over the course of his 13 year career. O'Dell broke into the bigs on June 20, 1954 with the Baltimore Orioles, and put up a 2.69 ERA in 140.1 innings pitched in 1957, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Billy O'Dell's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1962, when he posted a 3.53 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 195 batters. However, others believe that it was 1965, when he posted a 2.18 ERA, won 10 games, notched 18 saves and struck out 78 batters.
